No other driver of the Dakar 2020 dominated in his category as the Russian Andrey Karginov on his Kamaz in the TRUCK classification. A total of seven first places are a word of power against the competitiors and underline Andrey’s ability and exceptional talent. The brutal lead of over 42 minutes after 12 stages is a tough nut to crack for all fellow campaigners and will give many people food for thought in the future. This year, the Kamaz were on the move with an automatic transmission, which turned out to be the right decision. A total of five vehicles placed in the top 5!
Before the start of the Dakar 2020
After a two-year absence, Andrey Karginov made his return to the Dakar last year with his usual conquering state of mind. Two stages to refamiliarize himself with the Peruvian difficulties and two stages to show he was back (best time on stages 3 and 4 and second overall) And then…the nightmarish day! It began with a mechanical issue that forced the crew to continue on with just rear-wheel drive, which would have terrible repercussions when he was bypassing a dune and more importantly a group of spectators. Unfortunately, he couldn’t contact with an onlooker resulting in a broken leg. Upon arrival at the bivouac, Karginov was informed by the race stewards that he was disqualified. He accepted the decision and went to hospital. The return of the oldest Kamaz driver was a painful one. The career-results of the 43-year-old Russian speak for themselves with the win on the 2014 Dakar, two third-place finishes (in 2013 and 2015), with 11 stage wins. He enters his 8th Dakar with his long-time team mates Andrey Mokeev and Igor Leonov. While Eduard Nikolaev appears to be the leader of the Russian team, Karginov will certainly have his say, in as much as he knows Saudi Arabia. He took part in a race there early in his career.
A.K.: “At the start of our careers as drivers, we had the chance to participate in a race in Saudi Arabia. I venture to say that it was the toughest race of my career. I remember the dunes that were so difficult to cross. We had three teams and our only goal was to get through the dunes, not to win. It was a moral victory each day just to finish. It was so hard; we ran in a group to help each other and continue to move forward each time we got stuck in the sand. Since then we have gained quite a lot of experience and we are delighted to return the region.”
