Damit zieht man natürlich keine Wurst vom Brot.

Geht da was?

Damit lässt sich definitiv was anfangen.

Are 50 cubic centimeters enough for real offroad terrain or is the term ‚racing‘ just a marketing gimmick?

The shot glass class, as people like to call the 50s two-stroke engine, existed in enduro sport indeed. Only in germany it lost its former status in 1984 to the chagrin of the enduro young guns, while in Italy, Spain and France, for example, young people are still being sent off-road with it in a fight against the clock. No wonder that the top pilots from these countries also dominate the Enduro World Championship in most classes, as they have been sworn into off-road sport from a young age. As usual in off-road sports, the necessary road approval is essential. And this is where the AM driving license class in Germany comes into play, which sets the minimum age at 15 years, limits the displacement to a maximum of 50 cubic centimeters and limits the top speed to 45 km/h. The advantage of this displacement class is the fact that a registration at the relevant registration authority is not necessary, but a compact and inexpensive insurance number is sufficient for it.

We are less interested in the reduced engine power and speed limit here, because we move the Beta RR 50 Racing with open power. According to the results of the test bench, this means a maximum output of 6.4 hp and 6.1 Newton meters of torque. Of course you don’t pull a sausage from the bread with that. Much more decisive is when the power starts and how big the usable rev range is. That this works was not only proven by the World Championship riders from 1962, such as Ernst Degner, who became the first 50 Enduro World Champion of Germany.

In competition use, the proven Minarelli AM6 motor installed here is of course not used in the standard configuration, but pimped out to hell. Depending on the regulations and possibilities, unlimited tuning with a displacement of over 80 cubic centimeters means a peak output of up to 25 hp thanks to a new cylinder kit, adapted crankshaft, ignition and carburetor update. You have to let that melt in your mouth first. Theoretically, that would be a performance increase of over 390 percent. In clear numbers, that would mean an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 3.72 kg/hp. Here and now the 50 Beta has 14.5 kg/hp. Is that enough to make something happen?

Even with Beta in the 50 class, racing means mixing and no separate lubrication as with the standard model. So in with the fuel, actuate the handy kick starter and the 50 is already spinning along at a constant rev speed.

If you want propulsion, you first have to get to the 7000 rpm limit and then the little one will start marching. The six-speed gearbox fits like a glove and its gradation is never too long. But the 50 cubic centimeters want to be kept happy. And off we go off-road and the 50s surprise us more than we thought. If you keep the engine in the upper speed range, adjust the use of the clutch and give the gearbox a good stir, then the little red rocket marches through the terrain at up to 70 km/h. Lying on the road without a headwind, it’s sometimes 78 km/h. But off-road, this is a speed that amazes riders on normal sports enduro bikes with bigger engines and not only surprises me, with a height of 1.86m and 90 kg body weight including protective clothing, but also inspires me.

The playful handling and the low weight make it an ingenious vehicle for all off-road gimmicks. Of course, the small engine has to be kept up to high revs, otherwise hardly anything works. But here, too, the noticeable torque from the low revs is surprising, so driving through a town at low revs is quite possible.

What stands out: The excellently tuned suspension setup that can be peddled in classic terrain even with a rider weight of 90 kg.

In addition, there is a suitable brake system and of course the usual ergonomics of a real sports enduro. With a seat height of a good 935 millimeters, it is certainly one of the largest of its kind. After all, the suspension components have 265 millimeters of travel at the front and 255 at the rear. This is definitely something to start with. It takes jumps or compressions with maximum acceleration out of the corner like a big one.

Of course you shouldn’t overdo it, but it’s amazing what driving performance and possible maneuvers this little rocket surprises the driver with. A good 1.5 kilometer long ascent on damp ground with loose boulders and wet leaves peppered with a kind of serpentines: second gear at full throttle at maximum speed is the most when approaching – is it enough for the finish? It can get tricky, because once the speed drops, it becomes difficult to pick up this basic speed again on the slope due to a lack of power. So always use the clutch just in time and a lot so that there is enough speed, power and propulsion.

The traction is amazing, because wheelspin is simply scarce with 6.4 hp. It gets tight at the last bend: Wet slabs of rock, loose, rough stones, damp leaves and a steep incline that forces me into first gear. Now it’s just full throttle and no more giving way. With low speed, a screeching engine, the piston which would like to escape from the cylinder, the little Beta climbs this obstacle as well and amazes me again. The play instinct is awakened and the driving fun increases with every meter, so that I sometimes seriously challenge the accompanying large sports enduros. Steep uphill also means steep downhill and that’s easy with such a flyweight. While I’ve already arrived at the bottom and am enjoying my break, I enjoy watching my colleagues with their powerful but also heavier 350 and 450 subsets, who obviously have more trouble conquering the steep descent.

What does that mean overall?

Who would have thought: For 4,090 euros you get a sports enduro that, thanks to its genes, conjures up performance like the big ones on the parquet floor. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a light metal swing arm, fully adjustable suspension components or a suitable two-stroke sound. The small 50 beta in racing trim is not just an optical advertising gimmick, but actually delivers the desired racing performance in almost every respect. All in all, a sports enduro that can do much more than you would expect from just 50 cc and is therefore a real recommendation. Personally, the little Italian fascinated me, so I spent every free minute on this red rocket – what driving fun.
