Team de Rooy will not take part at the Dakar Rally 2021 in Saudi Arabia in january. The race trucks will stay at home at the behest of the main sponsors Iveco and Petronas. On closer inspection, they find it socially and economically ‚inappropriate‘ to take part in the toughest rally in the world during the ongoing corona crisis.

Gerard de Rooy had already announced in the spring that he would stay at home and had already sold three trucks. It is now clear, however, that the two remaining trucks, which were built and planned for Ton van Genugten from Eersel and the Argentine Federico Villagra, will not be at the start either.

Relief for drivers and mechanics

‚As the world suffers from Covid-19, the lenders Petronas and Iveco think it would not be appropriate to take part in the Dakar Rally,‘ says Henk van Leuven, manager at Team de Rooy. “You don’t want to take any chances. We as Team de Rooy fully agree with this. It’s a shame, but the drivers and mechanics are also relieved. Some have really been waiting for a vaccine. ‚

According to the current status and information from A.S.O, the Dakar Rally 2021 will take place as planned.
