Stephane Peterhansel: Victory on Stage 4 / Sieger der 4. Etappe
Nach vier Etappen feierte Stéphane Peterhansel endlich einen ersten Etappen-Sieg und konnte sich dabei genügend Zeit nehmen, um in der Gesamtwertung wieder an Boden gut zu machen. Nasser Al-Attiyah und Carlos Sainz fuhren eine eher konservativ Strategie, um ihre Positionen vor dem Ansturm von ‚Mister Dakar‘ verteidigen zu können. Die Jugend holt bei den SSV auf – der 23-jährige amerikanische Rookie Mitchell Guthrie holt sich mit nur 19 Sekunden den Etappensieg.
4. ETAPPE: Von Neom aus nach Al-ʿUlameanern heißt die Stadt der Zukunft verlassen, um die alten Wunder der Baumeister der nabatäischen Zivilisation zu entdecken, die vor zwei Jahrtausenden wussten, wie man Tempel in Felsen baut. Die mit hunderten von Tempeln übersäte Region liegen natürlich außerhalb der Reichweite der Dakar-Teilnehmer. Aber selbst nur in die Nähe dieser einmaligen Region zu gelangen, hat eine gigantische Anstrengung der Organisation erfordert. Frühmorgens in der Höhe mussten bereits die Biker die Kälte der Berge überwinden, vor allem aber das felsige Gelände und die Überquerung der Uwayrid-Harratal Vulkanregion, wo Navigationsfehler einen hohen Tribut fordern.

TIMO GOTSCHALK (X-Raid Team – Nr: 303) : Mit Platz 8 meldet sich der Co-Pilot von Fahrer Jakub Przygonski aus dem ORLEN-Team zurück. Gesamt bedeutet das nach wie vor nur Platz 58 mit 11h 19min Rückstand auf die Spitze!
MARKUS WALCHER/TOBIAS HENSCHEL (ENDURO XXX – Nr. 356): Mit Platz 67 kann man noch zufrieden sein, nachdem man einen Tag zuvor einen Überschlag fabrizierte und nach wie vor mit dem technischen Blessuren sowie teilweise Folgeschäden kämpft (Servo-Pumpe, Radaufhängung und Co.). Overall bedeutet das Rang 58 – weiterkämpfen JUNGS!

After four stages, Stéphane Peterhansel finally got to celebrate a win in the car category, clawing back enough time in the process to gain back lost ground in the general classification. Nasser Al-Attiyahand Carlos Sainzrode conservatively to defend their positions from the onslaught of „Mister Dakar“. Youth carried the day in the SSV race, with 23-year-old American rookie Mitchell Guthrietaking the spoils by just 19seconds.
Departing Neom for Al-ʿUlameans leaving behind the city of the future to discover the ancient wonders of the master builders of the Nabatean civilisation, who knew how to cut out temples in rocks two millennia ago. The sites peppered with a hundred temples are, of course, out of the reach of the Dakar competitors. However, even getting close to this area has taken a titanic effort. Riding at altitude in the early morning, bikers had to overcome the mountain chill, but especially the rocky terrain and a crossing of the Harratal ‚Uwayridvolcanic region, where any navigation mistakes take a heavy toll. Pictures of the tombs will have to wait.
Racing in a car for the second time after three editions on a motorbike, Mathieu Serradoriisproving to be one of the break-out stars of the Dakar. The Frenchman at the wheel of a Century buggy, which has not had as much time and money sunk into it as the factory Minisand Toyotas, has turned in an impeccable performance from the start despite the challenging navigation and took another top5 finish in Al-ʿUla, rocketing up to sixth place overall in the process. In fact, Serradori and his Belgian co-driver, Fabien Lurquin, are within three minutes of the top4 right now…
Two days after Giniel De Villiers, Stéphane Peterhanselbecame the second man to win Dakar stages on threecontinents. The Mini driver, who won six editions of the Dakar on a motorbike and three in a car in Africa in the 1990s and 2000s, went on toclaim another four overall victories in South America. In just over a week, he could become the first and only person to win the Dakar on three continents!
