Race 1 – SMX 450

Jorge Prado  shot out to the lead right away, but Haiden Deegan, who initially ran fourth, made quick moves around Cooper Webb and Roczen in the sand section. Roczen wasn’t having it though, and about a lap later he came up the inside of Deegan and took back over second. As Roczen started laying down laps, up crept Eli Tomac into fourth and looking to join the party. Hunter Lawrence, meanwhile, ran seventh early after a bad start. But after a few laps the top four started to spread out ever so slightly. With about thirteen minutes left Prado still led, but Roczen was closing on him slightly, with Deegan closing back in on Roczen. They’d distanced themselves from Tomac at this point, who was all alone in fourth.

As the race continued Roczen and Prado were yo-yoing, with each having sections of the track where they were better than the other. Prado seemed especially capable in the split lane and sand section that followed, and no matter how close Roczen got Prado would inch it back out in that part of the track. Roczen was finally able to get close enough in his strong section to make a pass by charging up the inside of Prado in a lefthand bowl turn and pushing him high. Roczen then dropped the hammer and put in some sprint laps to distance himself from Prado.

Lawrence was riding well and was putting up some great lap times, but once he got around Tomac for fourth he had a long way to go to catch Deegan. With five minutes left he had almost seven seconds to make up, and he wasn’t taking chunks that big out of Deegan, and he even gave some time back up on a few laps. He ended up settling in for fourth.

With three minutes to go Roczen had about a second-and-a-half on Prado, but Prado looked like he might be gearing up for one final push. With less than a minute on the clock Prado had reeled in Roczen, and in sections of the track was only half a second off his rear wheel. Roczen kept inching back away in sections though. On the final lap Prado was right on Roczen’s rear wheel and was tantalizingly close to coming up the inside of Roczen, coming within mere inches at times. Roczen held him off though, to the delight of the crowd, and brought home the win. Deegan took third, Lawrence fourth, and Cooper Webb rounded out the top five.

Dylan Ferrandis crashed in the first turn and charged back up to 13th. Justin Barcia had some sort of trouble, perhaps with his bike, signaled to his mechanic, and the two of them rode back to the pits while the race was still going.

Race 2 – SMX 450

Hunter Lawrence kicked things off with a holeshot, but Jorge Prado was quick to take over the spot, only to have Lawrence come right back and retake the lead. Cooper Webb held third with Ken Roczen and Haiden Deegan in fourth and fifth. Roczen was on rails and absolutely knifed through a 90 degree lefthander faster than anyone has all night. It brought him right up to Webb, and Roczen took the spot a couple turns later without protest from Webb. A lap later Roczen was all over Prado. It looked like Roczen would slice by at any moment, but Prado responded and pulled out about a second on Roczen. Webb also hung in there only a few seconds behind Roczen, while Deegan was slowly catching Webb. After about five minutes things settled down a little bit and Prado widened the gap to about three seconds over the next several laps.

Roczen looked like he may have lost just a tiny bit of intensity because not only was Prado getting away, Deegan, who had passed Webb, was catching him and was right on him at around the halfway point. But then Prado crashed in the sand all by himself. Roczen and Deegan zipped by, but Deegan then passed Roczen for second. It was a wild turn of events, that saw Roczen briefly winning the overall, but Prado came back and passed Roczen. This created a four-way tie for the win between Lawrence, Deegan, Prado, and Roczen as they ran.

With five minutes left it became apparent that Prado was catching Deegan, and a minute later Prado was half a second off Deegan’s rear wheel. For Prado it was for the win, for Deegan it was to stay on the podium. But then Deegan went down in the sand all by himself! Prado went by and Deegan got up just in time to stay ahead of Roczen. But Roczen got held up a little by Deegan and Webb got by them both, only to have Deegan come up the inside of the turn after the finish line jump and take Webb out. After that everyone kind of settled in with the clock running down.

Lawrence won this moto by a mile, with Prado, Deegan, Roczen, and Webb rounding out the top five.

Race 1 – SMX 250

Hunter Yoder nearly nabbed the holeshot in this one but went too wide and Julien Beaumer took the spot. Ryder DiFrancesco held second, with Drew Adams, Levi Kitchen, and Cole Davies filling out the top five.

As the race progressed Beaumer was holding a steady gap over DiFrancesco, but Beaumer made a mistake in some sand rollers, swapped, and had to slow up to avoid crashing. That put DiFrancesco right on his rear wheel for about half a lap, but Beaumer was able to inch back away. Back in fourth Davies had gotten by Kitchen and was starting to surge. When he got up to Adams he blew by him in the sand rollers like Adams was on a 125. A few laps later he caught DiFrancesco, who was only about a second back of Beaumer. The pass wouldn’t come so easily for Davies this time, however, as DiFrancesco responded, refusing to let Davies get close enough to show him a wheel. It’s also possible that Davies was biding his time here too, because there was still ten minutes left in the race and Beaumer wasn’t getting away up front. In any case, Davies ended up making a small mistake and sliding out a little which gave DiFrancesco a few seconds of extra breathing room.

Kitchen, meanwhile, must have had a problem or went down because suddenly he was in tenth place chasing Dilan Schwartz. Up front DiFrancesco was enduring an all-out onslaught from Davies, who’d caught back up. Davies tried to throw it inside on DiFrancesco, but DiFrancesco held him off. When Davies went inside in the split lane it looked like the pass was made, but then Davies pushed the front in the sand section and went down, handing third to Adams.

DiFrancesco had done a great job of keeping Beaumer close all moto, but with about three minutes left Beaumer started widening the gap, and with nobody anywhere near DiFrancesco to threaten him from behind, it looked like DiFrancesco settled in to bring it home for second. Beaumer took the win with DiFrancesco, Adams, Davies, and Kayden Minear filling out the top five.

Jo Shimoda didn’t get a good start and was only able to work up to sixth, while Kitchen battled back up to seventh. Hymas didn’t get a good start and at one point he stalled. If he crashed, we didn’t see it, but it’s unusual for him to finish 15th. Max Vohland got together with Marshal Weltin early in this one and DNF’d, while Weltin took 19th.

Race 2 – SMX 250

Some tense moments for Levi Kitchen in this one as his mechanic was fixing something on his bike just moments before the thirty second board came out. Luckily he got on the gate in time, and when it dropped Julien Beaumer shot out to yet another holeshot with Ryder DiFrancesco behind him. DiFrancesco had company in the form of Cole Davies, who was keen to make the pass early, which he did. But then Davies made a mistake in a fast left hander and got kicked over the next jump and crashed pretty hard. DiFrancesco was forced to check up, which let multiple riders by. Kitchen now had second and was closing on Beaumer bit by bit. Landen Gorden held a lonely third, with Jo Shimoda and Cameron McAdoo all by themselves in fourth and fifth.

Up front Kitchen had closed all the way to Beaumer and after the two sailed over the big double in the middle of the track Kitchen maneuvered inside Beaumer in the ensuing righthand bowl turn and took over the lead. It didn’t matter for Beaumer, who still had the overall on lock. With seven minutes left Kitchen and DiFrancesco were tied for second overall, with Kitchen getting the tiebreaking superior finish in the second moto. But DiFrancesco, who ran sixth at this point, wasn’t done. All he needed was one more spot to take over second overall. It would be a tough ask though, because Pierce Brown was quite a ways ahead of DiFrancesco. If DiFrancesco could make up four seconds, and pass Brown, it would make a huge difference in the championship. Well, DiFrancesco wouldn’t catch Brown, but after Brown caught and passed Landen Gordon, DiFrancesco followed suit, which delivered him a very hard fought second overall.

Shimoda was riding well in this one and with about two minutes left he was all over Beaumer. It wouldn’t matter for Beaumer, he’d still have the overall win, and he didn’t put up too much of a fight when Shimoda went up the inside of him right after the finish line.

Kitchen won the moto followed by Shimoda, Beaumer, Brown, and DiFrancesco. Davies ended up having more trouble and DNF’d before the halfway point of the moto rolled around.
