Fact check: Based in Hengelo in the Netherlands, STERN Technologies B.V. is presenting a new e-bike called Radian EXR. Presenting is still a bit much to say, because so far only pre-orders are possible. Market readiness and availability are forecast for the end of 2027.
Revolutionary concept? That definitely remains to be seen, even if you want to serve all divisions with the EXR. If you look at the manufacturer’s information, you can only guess whether the previous top dogs can actually be pressed by the Radian concept.

Here are a few numbers: 70 hp, a range of between 60 and 115 km at race pace or 1-7 hours in normal operation. A total weight of 125 kg. An Endurance 8.6 kWh battery for long distances is standard equipment, but there is also an optional Sprint battery with 5.8 kWh for an extra charge, which is supposed to reduce the vehicle weight to 113 kilograms. The starting price for the Radian EXR starts at 14,450 euros.
The market leader Stark Varg EX in comparison: 80 hp, up to 6 hours of driving time. A total weight of 120 kg. 7.2 kWh battery in the series. Starting price 13,990 euros, while the 60 hp variant costs 12,990 euros.
Roughly summarized, the Radian EXR would be weaker, heavier and more expensive than the market leader when looking at the data provided. Of course, a 30-second battery change is an interesting feature, but it requires that you have invested in a second battery. This costs 3,990 euros extra at Stark, for example. However, the additional weight of 5 kilograms of the Radian is a hefty affair in the off-road world that should not be underestimated.

The equipment in comparison: Radian speaks of a maximum speed of 14,000 rpm. How this value is to be assessed in practice is up to everyone to decide for themselves. Especially since an e-bike can provide full power from a standstill. The super torque in the case of the Radian with 1060 Newton meters and the Stark with 1036, which the manufacturers like to state, are purely theoretical in nature and have little to do with reality. However, a large storage compartment is quite interesting, which definitely has added value in practice. Kayaba suspension components, Brembo brakes are the general standard, while in the case of the Limited Founder’s Edition, Haan-Wheels wheels based on A60 Excel rims are added. The 336 volt motor is water-cooled and has radiators. There is also an optional onboard charger, which should allow charging on the go anywhere, as long as a power source is available. As usual, all parameters can be influenced via an app in order to find one’s personal best setting.
Visually, the classic design is used, while additional side frame cables are used. This is partly and most likely due to the battery replacement mechanism and the necessary stiffness of the frame.

Of course, competition stimulates business and that is also good, so as to drive further developments in the economy. As always, it is debatable whether 80 hp is too much in the case of the Stark Varg EX or the 70 hp of the announced Radian EXR is too little. The only decisive factor is how easily the power can be transferred to the ground in order to generate maximum propulsion. And not only for full professionals, but also for beginners or hobby pilots. Of course, Stark has an enormous advantage in this respect, as they have been serving the market for several years and have immense experience in real use.

Ultimately, as always, it is a matter of waiting until series production is reached and the end customer product can prove its advance praise in use. Only then can a realistic conclusion be drawn. Of course, this also includes things such as service, spare parts supply, dealer network and the processing of warranty claims.
