Coming into the 2024 Budds Creek National, Chase Sexton holds a 28-point lead over Hunter Lawrence. Last weekend Chase went 2-1 and Hunter went 1-2, this weekend, Chase is looking to continue building on the strong summer he’s had and also retain the 25+ point lead going into Ironman, that way he can win the Championship one moto early. Ken Roczen joined the series for the first time last weekend at Unadilla in the 450 class, but he’s not racing today at Budds Creek. Instead, he’s at home riding his new Suzuki RM-Z250, getting ready for the publicity stunt of the year next weekend where he’ll drop back down to the 250 class to race against Haiden Deegan and the rest of the 250 Pro Motocross class. Cooper Webb returned to racing last weekend, but he reinjured his thumb in the second moto and is not racing at Budds Creek. We expect him to miss Ironman as well to heal up for the SMX playoffs.
The exciting news for today is Eli Tomac’s return to racing. This is his first round back after injuring his thumb at the Denver Supercross earlier this year.
Hunter Lawrence once again grabbed the holeshot, and this time Chase Sexton was a little closer around the first turn, he was fourth early behind Plessinger and Stewart. Aaron Plessinger pressured Lawrence early, it looked like he was going to make the pass, but then Hunter was able to keep him behind and start to pull a little gap.
Eli Tomac did not have a good start, he was buried on the first lap in 18th. Colt Nichols had a good start on his new HEP Suzuki ride, he ran eighth early. Unfortunately, he went down hard two laps later. Six minutes into the second moto, Hunter had a 2-second lead over Aaron Plessinger and a 3.5-second lead on Chase Sexton.
At the halfway point, Chase Sexton had passed his teammate and came up to second behind Hunter, but then he tucked the front end and went down, dropping back to fourth momentarily. Then, over the next two laps he passed Malcolm Stewart for third and then he passed his teammate, Aaron Plessinger for second in the turning roller section before the finish, for the second time this moto. Tomac was 12th with eight minutes plus two laps to go. With just over five minutes on the clock, Chase Sexton caught up to Hunter and made the pass for the lead.

Haiden Deegan has only been off the podium in two motos and he’s only been outside of the top five in one moto this summer, making it extremely hard for the competition to gain points on the young star. The 2024 Budds Creek National is the penultimate round of the 2024 Pro Motocross season, and with a 70-point lead, Haiden is looking to wrap up this Championship one race early. The Budds Creek National is highly rated amongst the pro riders as one of the best tracks on the circuit, and the track is extra technical today with the rain we got earlier this morning.
Haiden Deegan had already clinched the Championship in the first moto and he started on the very inside gate again, but this time he got pinched off coming off the gate and was dead last coming into the first turn, just like Chase Sexton in 450 moto 1. However, Haiden wasn’t as quick to make passes on the first lap, he was in 11th place after five and a half minutes of racing. Levi Kitchen grabbed the holeshot and he led early. Chance Hymas passed Jalek Swoll for a second and quickly caught up to the backside of Levi Kitchen who explained on the podium after the first moto that he’s been sick all week, not riding in between Unadilla and Budds Creek.
Closing in on the halfway point, Haiden was running tenth, stuck behind his teammate Nick Romano. Being that Haiden had already wrapped up the title, you could tell that he didn’t have the same fight in him for moto 2. The second moto has been much better for Levi Kitchen, Chance caught up to him five minutes into the race, and Levi held him off despite lots of challenges from the HRC Honda rider. Impressively, Levi was able to hold Hymas off and go on to win the moto and the overall with 3-1 moto scores.
