Dramatisch: Cody Webb (Sherco Werksfahrer) wird von den Locals um über eine Stunde deklassiert. Doch zunächst auf Anfang: Kawelo Huddy führte seine Teamkollegen von Kauai Racing Development (KRD) zu einem Profi-Podiumsplatz beim Ultimate Hawaiian Hard Enduro, bei dem gerade der Sherco Werksfahrer Cody Webb im „hawaiianischen Schlamm“ zu kämpfen hatte. Das vom Garden Island Motorcycle Club veranstaltete erste Ultimate Hawaiian Hard Enduro auf der Insel Kauai war keine offizielle Runde der US Hard Enduro Series, sondern eine Vorstellungsrunde ohne Punktewertung und die erste Veranstaltung des IRC Endurofest-Hawaii.
Das Ultimate Hawaiian Hard Enduro bestand aus zwei verschiedenen Runden, die in drei Kategorien unterteilt waren, von den Profis bis zu den B-Klassen. Dieser Abschnitt von Kauai ist nur einen Steinwurf von einem der feuchtesten Orte der Erde entfernt. Das bedeutet im Detail, dass die Menge an Bewuchs und extrem rutschigen Schlamm für Fahrer, die das noch nie gesehen haben, unvorstellbar ist.
Die Rennen begannen mit einer Endurocross-Strecke und führten dann in die Berge zur ersten Runde, die Webb zunächst noch souverän anführte. Nach dem Auftanken, etwa eine Stunde nach Beginn des Rennens, machten sie sich auf den Weg zurück in die Berge und Webbs komfortabler Vorsprung schwand dramatisch, als sie die Anstiege auf dem „Hawaiian Ice“ (unglaublich glatter Schlamm) erreichten. Das hawaiianische Eis, wie man dazu sagt, ist mit den steilen Vulkankämmen, nassen Lavasteinen und endlosen Wurzeln das perfekte Rezept für einen sehr harten Hardenduro-Nachmittag, wie Cody Webb auch als äußert erfolgreicher Werksfahrer feststellen musste.
Es gab mehrere Bergauffahrten, die viele Versuche erforderten, was nicht wenigen Teilnehmern wertvolle Zeit und Energie kostet. Einer, den das nicht betraf war Huddy, der nahezu jeden Anstieg aufs erste Mal bezwang, Webb überholen konnte und auf und davon fuhr. Guest und Kamakana, die mehrmals pro Woche in diesem Gelände trainieren, kämpften und halfen sich gegenseitig, gewannen an Boden und überholten Webb ebenfalls.
Im Ziel hatte Huddy drei Stunden Fahrzeit auf der Uhr und gewann damit die Klasse überlegen, während Ryder Guest ganze 49 Minuten später auf dem zweiten Platz ins Ziel kam und Kamakana auf dem dritten Platz. Webb konnte noch den vierten Platz retten, musste aber eine Schlappe von einer Stunde und dreizehn Minuten hinnehmen. Hinter ihm platzierte sich Travis Taldo.
Cody seinerseits erklärte: „Ich habe das Gefühl, ein anständiger Fahrer zu sein … und es tut mir ein wenig weh, wenn ich acht Versuche brauche, bis ich einen Hügel bezwinge.“

Die Wahrheit ist, dass die einheimischen Jungs das passende Setup gewählt hatten und die KRD-Teamkollegen alle sehr starke Rennen fuhren. Zugleich konnte sie ihre Ortskenntnisse sowie die zahlreichen Trainingseinheiten in diesem außergewöhnlichen Gelände für sich nutzen. Das aber dadurch der fahrerische Unterschied so groß sein würde, hatte weder Cody Webb noch die Fachpresse samt Veranstalter erwartet.
Die GIMC und Ultimate Hawaiian Hard Enduro veranstalteten ein großartiges Rennevent und eine Ausstellungsrunde für die US Hard Enduro Series. Das zweite Rennen des IRC Endurofest-Hawaii ist das Koa Mauna Hard Enduro an diesem Samstag, auf der Kahuku Motocross-Strecke an der Nordküste von Oahu – was für Namen!
HARDENDURO HAWAII: A mud fight like on ice!
Dramatic: Cody Webb (Sherco factory driver) is outclassed by the locals by over an hour. But first, back to the beginning: Kawelo Huddy led his teammates from Kauai Racing Development (KRD) to a professional podium finish at the Ultimate Hawaiian Hard Enduro, where Sherco factory rider Cody Webb was struggling in the “Hawaiian mud”. The first Ultimate Hawaiian Hard Enduro on the island of Kauai, hosted by the Garden Island Motorcycle Club, was not an official round of the US Hard Enduro Series, but rather a non-points-based introduction round and the first event of the IRC Endurofest-Hawaii.
The Ultimate Hawaiian Hard Enduro consisted of two different rounds divided into three categories, from the Pros to the B Classes. This section of Kauai is just a stone’s throw from one of the wettest places on earth. What this means in detail is that the amount of vegetation and extremely slippery mud is unimaginable for drivers who have never seen it before.
The races began with an endurocross route and then led into the mountains for the first lap, which Webb initially led confidently. After refueling, about an hour into the race, they headed back into the mountains and Webb’s comfortable lead dwindled dramatically as they hit the climbs on the ‚Hawaiian Ice‘ (incredibly slippery mud). The Hawaiian ice, as they say, with its steep volcanic ridges, wet lava rocks and endless roots, is the perfect recipe for a very hard hard enduro afternoon, as Cody Webb also discovered as an extremely successful factory rider.
There were several climbs that required many attempts, which cost quite a few participants valuable time and energy. One person who wasn’t affected was Huddy, who conquered almost every climb the first time, was able to overtake Webb and drove up and away. Guest and Kamakana, who train in this area several times a week, fought and helped each other, gaining ground and also overtaking Webb.
At the finish, Huddy had three hours of riding time on the clock and thus won the class, while Ryder Guest finished a full 49 minutes later in second place and Kamakana in third place. Webb was able to save fourth place, but had to accept a loss of one hour and thirteen minutes. Travis Taldo placed himself behind him.
For his part, Cody explained, ‚I feel like I’m a decent rider… and it hurts me a little if it takes me eight tries to get over a hill.‘
The truth is that the local guys had the right setup and the KRD teammates all had very strong races. At the same time, she was able to use her local knowledge and the numerous training sessions in this extraordinary terrain. Neither Cody Webb nor the trade press and the organizer expected that the difference in driving would be so big.
The GIMC and Ultimate Hawaiian Hard Enduro put on a great racing event and exhibition round for the US Hard Enduro Series. The second race of IRC Endurofest-Hawaii is the Koa Mauna Hard Enduro this Saturday, at the Kahuku Motocross track on Oahu’s North Shore – what names!
