The trademark track featured soft sand, techy rhythm sections and the steep, angled bridge among the obstacles – exactly what we’ve come to expect from the skilled German track builders. As usual, it delivered some of the hardest and best racing of the season. “Difficult to ride fast and smooth,” said world champion Billy Bolt, who would go on to prove himself wrong.

Fastest on track by half a second during daytime practice and qualifying, Jonny Walker laid down a marker for everyone else, including Bolt.

But in Superpole, it was EnduroGP World Champion Josep Garcia who first caught the eye with a neat, tidy lap for second place. Bolt, though, claimed the fastest lap when it mattered most. Minor mistakes put Walker fifth, behind Mitch Brightmore in third and Eddie Karlsson in P4, once again leaving him out of the points and set to suffer with gate picks.

Moto 1

This one should have been straightforward when Billy grabbed the holeshot ahead of Jonny and Eddie. It was the round one podium all over again and they looked set.

But, just like in previous visits to Riesa, Bolt made mistakes and for a few laps looked flustered. Walker kept calm and carried on out front before a bogey section of the track caught him two laps running, giving Bolt the sniff he needed to retake the lead and build a gap for the win.

Eddie Karlsson had a front-row seat for all the action, keeping it clean to finish a confident third ahead of Josep Garcia, who worked hard for P4 after a first-turn tangle with a concrete pipe cost him. Mitch Brightmore followed, fighting back but beaten on the line by Mani Lettenbichler.

Moto 2

While the crowd cheered Lettenbichler’s holeshot in the second race, Billy Bolt pulled a remarkable inside line from the second row to literally jump past his hard enduro rival into the lead before turn two. It was textbook Bolt after the errors of moto one, and he went on to claim a convincing win despite complaining of arm pump.

Walker again picked off everyone else but had no answer to the gap to the Husqvarna rider out front, settling for a lonely second.

The action was all behind, with Karlsson and Lettenbichler battling for third, while Brightmore and Garcia scrapped for fifth. The outcome was Stark beating KTM, beating X-Grip Racing GASGAS, beating KTM, respectively.

Moto 3

Bolt was once again the master of the final moto, almost going unnoticed as he took the holeshot to flag and rode at his very best.

The fight behind was superb, though, between Karlsson and a storming Garcia, growing in confidence with each race, with Walker right on their tail. Josep made the move on Karlsson, who started to look tired, and mistakes then allowed Walker, Brightmore and Dominik Olszowy through, costing him an overall podium.

Brightmore put late pressure on Walker for third and it paid off, forcing a mistake from the Triumph rider who ended up fifth in the final moto.

The overall outcome was a vintage performance from the world champion: a full house on the night with Superpole, three moto wins and the Acerbis fastest lap award.

Despite second overall, Walker will again reflect on a Superpole mistake and a couple of chances lost through errors in the races, losing further ground on Bolt in the title race.

But perhaps the biggest story of the night was the new guy: SuperEnduro rookie Josep Garcia on the podium for the first time and looking like he’s loving the indoor enduro scene. His home round is round three in two weeks in Bilbao.
