Buying your first 4WD can get expensive fast, especially when you are working with a hard budget. Tim is a first year apprentice with $22,726.50 to spend and he is looking at an N70 Toyota Hilux. The big question is whether he should buy one that is already modified, or start with a more standard Hilux and build it himself. A modified 4WD can save you thousands in accessories, but you are also buying someone else’s choices, workmanship and history. A stock 4WD gives you a clean starting point, but once you add suspension, tyres, protection, recovery gear and touring equipment, the budget can disappear very quickly.
