Die dritte Runde der AMA Hardenduro-Serie führte nach Osten in die Brushy Mountains von North Carolina zum Battle of the Goats. Was ohnehin schon eine der herausforderndsten Runden der Serie ist, wurde durch sintflutartigen Regen nochmal gesteigert. Der Kurs und dessen Bedingungen sorgten dafür, dass nur 22 Fahrer in der Lage waren eine volle Runde zu absolvieren. Nur 10 Fahrer schafften in der Maximal-Zeit von sechs Stunden (!) zwei ganze Runden. Die Profis waren definitiv am absoluten Limit.
Die Fahrer wurden am Samstagmorgen von heftigen Regenfällen geweckt. Deshalb verschob man die Startzeit für den Prolog auf den Nachmittag. Leider wurde es nicht besser und der Prolog würde mit einem Platzregen gestartet. In Fünferreihen wurde im einminütigen Abstand gestartet. Die Startplätze wurden nach dem Zufallsprinzip vergeben, so dass sich beispielsweise Cooper Abbott in Reihe vier und Cody Webb in Reihe fünf wieder fanden. Cody Webb kam erst an Fahrtag in North Carolina an, da seine Frau am Morgen zuvor eine kleine Tochter auf die Welt gebracht hatten – Glückwunsch!
Cooper Abbott war in der Lage, den Hole-Shot aus Reihe vier beim Prolog zu holen und einen Vorsprung bis zum ersten Hindernis „Chicken Fight Hill“ zu halten. Er blieb durch eine riskante Linienwahl hängen, verlor aber deswegen nicht viel Zeit. Cody Webb hatte ebenfalls einen guten Start hingelegt und konnte in der zweiten Runde den zweiten Platz halten. Am Ende des Prologs schafft er es sogar noch auf Platz 1, gefolgt von Trystan Hard auf dem zweiten.

Die Fahrer hofften auf bessere Bedingungen für das Hauptrennen am Sonntag aufgrund des enormen Schwierigkeitsgrads auf dieser Strecke. Obwohl sich die Wetterlage leicht verbesserte, gab es an den meisten Stellen des Kurses immer noch zähe Schlammpassagen zu bewältigen. Doch das war noch nicht alles. Denn immerhin betrug die Streckenlänge satte 27,2 Kilometer durch Bachbetten, Wasserfälle wie „Wentzle’s Waterslide“ und steile Anstiege wie „Little Romaniacs“. Und zu guter Letzt musste eine zweite Runde absolviert werden ohne das 6 Stunden Zeitlimit zu überschreiten.
Während Cody Webb als Führender in seiner 5er Startgruppe loslegte, fand er sich am Ende auf P5, als er in die Endurocross-Strecke einbog. Ein Fahrfehler hatte ihm fast drei Minuten Rückstand auf die beiden schnellsten Fahrer Trystan Hart und Ryder Leblond eingebracht.
Als die Fahrer über die Endurocross-Strecke zurückkamen, hatte Trystan Hart einen dreiminütigen Vorsprung vor Leblond, gefolgt von Webb mit ebenfalls drei Minuten Rückstand. Doch Will Riordan, der am Vortag der drittschnellste Qualifikant war, lag nur eine Minute hinter Webb und machte ordentlich Druck auf den frischgebackenen Vater.
Webb fuhr die Strecke größtenteils auf Sicht, da er keine Zeit hatte, sich die wichtigsten Hindernisse im Vorfeld zu Fuß genauer zu betrachten. Dadurch häufte sich die Fehlerquote, aber umso mehr gab er Gas um dranzubleiben. Nach der ersten Runde baute Hart seinen Vorsprung auf Leblond auf sechs Minuten aus. Während Leblond auch seinen Vorsprung auf Webb auf fast vier Minuten ausgebaut hatte. Doch Runde zwei würde für Webb eine neue Angelegenheit werden, da er jetzt wusste, was auf ihn zukam. Dadurch konnte er Leblond einholen und einen Teil der zweiten Runde mit ihm fighten. Als die Fahrer aus dem Wald wieder herauskamen, hatte Hart einen Vorsprung von satten 9:50 Minuten auf Webb, der auf den 2. Platz vorgefahren war. Bis zum nächsten Kontrollpunkt reduzierte er den Vorsprung auf 4:30 Minuten, was leider nicht mehr ausreichte, um Trystan Hart noch einzuholen.
„Ich bin in Runde eins wie ein Idiot gefahren“, sagte Cody Webb. „Ich war etwas im Nachteil, da ich die Strecke nicht besichtigen konnte. Dafür bin ich aber frischgebackener Vater“, fuhr ein lächelnder Cody Webb fort. „Runde zwei und ich konnte endlich so fahren, wie ich es eigentlich kann. Ich überraschte mich selbst immer wieder, wie viel Boden ich auf die Spitze gut machte. Am Ende hat es nicht gereicht, aber ich habe alles gegeben. Ich freue mich schon jetzt auf die nächste Runde“, schloss Webb ab.
Ergebnisse
Round three of the AMA Hardenduro series headed east into the Brushy Mountains of North Carolina for the Battle of the Goats. What is already one of the most challenging rounds of the series was made even worse by torrential rain. The course and its conditions meant that only 22 riders were able to complete a full lap. Only 10 drivers managed two full laps in the maximum time of six hours (!). The pros were definitely at their absolute limit.
Drivers were woken up by heavy rain on Saturday morning. Therefore, the start time for the prologue was postponed to the afternoon. Unfortunately it didn’t get any better and the prologue would start with a downpour. The races started in rows of five, one minute apart. The starting places were assigned at random, so that, for example, Cooper Abbott found himself in row four and Cody Webb in row five. Cody Webb didn’t arrive in North Carolina until drive day as his wife had given birth to a baby daughter the morning before – congratulations!
Cooper Abbott was able to get the hole shot from row four of the prologue and hold a lead all the way to the first obstacle, Chicken Fight Hill. He got stuck with a risky line choice but didn’t lose much time because of it. Cody Webb also got off to a good start and was able to hold onto second place on the second lap. At the end of the prologue he even makes it to number 1, followed by Trystan Hard in second.

The drivers were hoping for better conditions for the main race on Sunday due to the enormous degree of difficulty on this track. Although the weather conditions improved slightly, there were still tough mud passages to be overcome on most parts of the course. But that was not all. After all, the route length was a whopping 27.2 kilometers through stream beds, waterfalls like ‚Wentzle’s Waterslide‘ and steep climbs like ‚Little Romaniacs‘. And last but not least, a second lap had to be completed without exceeding the 6 hour time limit.
While Cody Webb started out as the leader in his starting group of 5, he ended up finding himself in P5 as he turned onto the Endurocross track. A driving error had put him almost three minutes behind the two fastest drivers, Trystan Hart and Ryder Leblond.
As the riders came back across the Endurocross course, Trystan Hart had a three-minute lead over Leblond, followed by Webb, also three minutes behind. But Will Riordan, who was the third fastest qualifier the day before, was just a minute behind Webb and was putting the new dad under serious pressure.
Webb rode most of the route on sight, as he didn’t have time to get a closer look at the major obstacles on foot beforehand. This increased the error rate, but all the more he gave gas to keep up. After the first lap, Hart extended his lead over Leblond to six minutes. While Leblond had also extended his lead over Webb to almost four minutes. But round two would be a new affair for Webb now that he knew what was in store. This allowed him to catch Leblond and fight with him for part of the second round. By the time the riders emerged from the woods, Hart had a whopping 9:50 lead over Webb, who had moved up to 2nd place. By the next checkpoint, he reduced the lead to 4:30 minutes, which unfortunately wasn’t enough to catch up with Trystan Hart.
‚I drove like an idiot on lap one,‘ said Cody Webb. “I was at a bit of a disadvantage because I couldn’t inspect the track. But I’m a new dad,‘ continued a smiling Cody Webb. “Lap two and I was finally able to ride like I can. I kept surprising myself at how much ground I was gaining at the top. In the end it wasn’t enough, but I gave everything. I’m already looking forward to the next round,‘ concluded Webb.
