  • The 26th edition of the Rallye du Maroc, which brought down the curtain on the W2RC, did not disappoint. The FIA world championship was decided on the very last day of the season. Lucas Moraes (Toyota Gazoo Racing W2RC) cast Nasser Al Attiyah (The Dacia Sandriders) down from the throne in a first for Brazil and the whole world. Édouard Boulanger (The Dacia Sandriders) won the rally with Sébastien Loeb and secured the navigators‘ title.
  • Nicolás Cavigliasso (Valentina Pertegarini) followed the example of his navigator, Valentina Pertegarini, and became the champion driver in Challenger. Manuel Andújar (South Racing Can-Am) prevailed in SSV, but Alexandre Pinto and Bernardo Oliveira (Old Friends Rally) already had the title in the bag.
  • In the motorbike category, Tosha Schareina (Monster Energy Honda HRC) emerged victorious from a duel with the newly crowned RallyGP champion, Daniel Sanders (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing). The Australian propelled KTM towards their first-ever FIM manufacturers‘ championship.
  • Edgar Canet (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) wrapped up the Rally2 championship in style, taking the title and the rally to boot. Thomas Zoldos (Aub’Moto) finished second in the Rally3 class in Morocco, behind Noa Sainct (Nomade Racing), to pocket the title in his class.
  • Next stop, 2026! W2RC Season 5 will again consist of five rounds, including the Dakar, which will get the ball rolling in Saudi Arabia from 3 to 17 January.

ULTIMATE: LOEB BACK AT THE SUMMIT AS MORAES TAKES THE THRONE

Sébastien Loeb had already finished on the podium in South Africa (second) and Portugal (third), but victory still eluded him. The Frenchman, who did not hit a single bum note at the Rallye du Maroc, withstood the onslaught of the impetuous Lucas Moraes (+5′43″) and the battle-hardened Nani Roma (Ford M-Sport, +6′15″). He opened his account with Dacia and went back to his winning ways in the W2RC three years after his maiden win at the Andalucía Rally. His victory also catapulted Édouard Boulanger to the pinnacle of the navigators‘ championship. Featuring five Toyotas, three Fords and two Dacias inside the top 10, as well as five different winners in six specials, the race standings are yet another reminder of the depth and diversity of the W2RC field.

The other big winner of the week was the runner-up, Moraes, who had landed in Morocco with a 10-point deficit to Nasser Al Attiyah and was still behind him going into the final stage. Yet everything changed when the Qatari was handed down a penalty for not observing the Control Stop at the finish of the Power Selective Section. The Brazilian pulled ahead at the very last minute (9 points) and landed his first FIA world championship. The Paulistano inflicted Al Attiyah his first defeat since 2022 and shared the podium with his teammate Henk Lategan. Together, they played a key role in delivering Toyota Gazoo Racing W2RC the FIA manufacturers‘ championship.

CHALLENGER: MR AND MRS CHAMPION

The navigator Valentina Pertegarini had already secured the title before the Moroccan leg, but her driver —and husband— Nicolás Cavigliasso had yet to finish the job here. Pau Navarro (BBR Motorsport) was his main threat in the race for the championship. The Spaniard did what he had to do, winning the race, but the Argentinian, unfazed, stuck to his plan with metronomic consistency. Second here, Cavigliasso outdid Navarro in the championship to take his first title. Dania Akeel (BBR Motorsport), fifth last year, continued her progression and clambered onto the third step of the championship podium. Cavigliasso and Pertegarini are the first couple to win the W2RC together.

SSV: ANDÚJAR OPENS HIS ACCOUNT

The top-ranked W2RC entrant in Morocco, Manuel Andújar (South Racing Can-Am), netted Argentina its first triumph in the class. The Portuguese aces Alexandre Pinto (Old Friends Rally Team) and Bernardo Oliveira were already mathematically assured of the drivers‘ and navigators‘ title, respectively. Their team scored a one-two in the championship thanks to Enrico Gaspari, who overcame Michele Cinotto (CST Xtreme Plus Polaris) in the duel for the runner-up’s spot.

RALLYGP: SCHAREINA EXACTS REVENGE BUT KTM TAKE THE MANUFACTURERS‘ CROWN

Daniel Sanders had the title in the bag before the finale, having dominated the first four rounds of the season. The newly minted world champion was chasing the Grand Slam in Morocco, but Tosha Schareina was equally determined to break his streak and secure the silver medal. Mission accomplished for the Spaniard, who grabbed three stages out of six and took the overall by 3′12″ over „Chucky“ and 9′37″ over Ricky Brabec. The triumvirate of the season lit the fireworks in Morocco, with Ignacio Cornejo (Hero MotoSports) fishing a stage win in troubled waters. Sanders did pocket enough points to deliver KTM their first-ever FIM manufacturers‘ world championship and end the Honda supremacy.

RALLY2: CANET BRINGS IT HOME IN STYLE

Dakar, South African Safari Rally and bp Ultimate Rally Raid Portugal: Edgar Canet had won every single round he had completed. The Rallye du Maroc did not buck the trend. Michael Docherty (BAS World KTM, second) and Konrad Dąbrowski (Duust Rally, third), pushed the Spaniard hard, winning a combined five out of six specials. Canet, a paragon of consistency, added his name to the annals of the rally and the W2RC, ascending the throne in his first season. It is also the KTM factory team’s first Rally2 victory. Tobias Ebster, second in Hero MotoSports‘ first year in the class, and Docherty, third, escorted Canet on the podium. BAS World KTM also took the inaugural edition of the teams championship ahead of Xraids Experience and SRG Motorsports.

RALLY3: SAINCT TAKES THE RALLY AND ZOLDOS THE TITLE

Fresh off his victorious W2RC debut in Portugal, Thomas Zoldos was long in contention for the Moroccan rally. In the end, the up-and-coming Frenchman Noa Sainct got the better of his compatriot, also winning on his first championship outing. Zoldos took the runner-up’s spot and will bring the world title to the Aub’Moto dealership, which supplied his Beta. Carlo Cabini (RS Moto) and Sainct escorted him on the podium of the class for enduro riders trying their hand at rally raids.

W2RC IN MOURNING

On stage 5 of the Rallye du Maroc, motorcycle competitor Jorge Brandão, who was participating in the race for the second time, crashed in the dunes at kilometre 214. He was quickly taken in charge by the doctors of a medical helicopter and transported to the hospital in Erfoud, where tragically he passed away at 1:55 pm. The W2RC offers its most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
