Rally Breslau 2022 – Day 1

Nach dem zeremoniellen Start und der kurzen Qualifying-Etappe am Sonntag ging es für die Teilnehmer am Montag in den ersten richtigen vollen Tag der Rallye Breslau 2022. Der Start von Etappe 1 war auf Grund einiger militärischer Aktivitäten in der Gegend verzögert und die Teilnehmer hatten genügend Zeit, ihre Roadbooks und Fahrzeuge vorzubereiten. Auf dem Programm standen 3 selektive Abschnitte (zwei kurze und einer länger) auf 3 verschiedenen Terrains rund um Zagan in den Polygonen der polnischen Sahara. Die Gesamtstrecke betrug 186 km mit 59 km Verbindungsetappe und 127 km gezeitete Strecke. Das Gelände bot schnelle und staubige Strecken mit kniffliger Navigation. Leider war aufgrund der ständigen Armeeübungen – sehr oft Tag und Nacht – der Zutritt zu Terrains, in denen sich die extreme Kategorie zu Hause fühlen würden nicht gestattet. Aber sicherlich genossen alle die gewaltige Kraft der polnischen Sahara und die schwierigen Panzerstraßen, sodass man glücklich und erleichtert im Ziel ankam.
Die Rennfahrzeuge starteten in zwei Gruppen mit einer gemischten Reihenfolge, entsprechend den Zeiten aus dem Prolog: Enduro und ATV + Trucks aus allen Klassen, sowie SSV + Autos. Die Gruppen fuhren die gleichen Etappen, aber mit Rotation für jede Gruppe und zwei getrennten Vorstarts.
Die Gruppe der Bikes, Quads und Trucks bewältigte zunächst die beiden kürzeren Zeitabschnitte und durften dann als Sahnestückchen die größere Etappe in Angriff nehmen. Auf zwei Rädern war es Nerimantas Jucius (#28, Husqvarna), der nach Leg 1 das Kommando über die Rangliste übernahm. Der Pilot aus Litauen beendete das Rennen mit 8 Minuten Vorsprung auf Eduard Hillebrand aus den Niederlanden (#75, KTM) und ein paar Sekunden mehr auf Tomasz Dabrowski Polen (#86, KTM).
In der ATV-Klasse sahen wir den zweiten dreifachen Etappensieg in Folge für Polen und Polaris, nachdem Rafal Jawien (#69), Marcin Wilkolek (#80) und Ireneusz Ostafin (77) die schnellsten Piloten auf der Strecke waren. Jawien hat winzige 40 Sekunden Vorsprung auf Wikolek, der Ostafin mit nur einer halben Minute anführt.
Die Etappe war sowohl für Cross Country als auch für extreme Trucks gleich. In der Rallye-Raid-Truck-Klasse erwischte Florian Skibba (#412) aus Deutschland mit Iveco einen guten Tag und wurde Sieger, 13 Minuten vor dem holländischen Piloten Gerrit Zuurmond (#420, MAN). Dritter des Tages wurde ein weiterer Fahrer aus den Niederlanden – Aad Van Velsen (#404, Scania). In der Klasse der extremen Lkw waren mit Steffen Braun (#453) als Etappensieger und Alfred Wemhof (#468) als Vizemeister zwei deutsche Unimog mit den besten Zeiten dabei. Der dritte Platz ging an den Piloten der Big-Truck-Klasse Oliver Leyh (#457, MAN KAT), ebenfalls aus Deutschland.
Die zweite Gruppe – die der SSVs und Autos (sowohl CC als auch EX) startete dagegen mit der größten Etappe und fuhr danach die beiden kleineren Abschnitte. In der Leichtgewichtsklasse der SSV-Maschinen beendete Kees Box (#106) aus den Niederlanden erfolgreich den Kampf mit zwei estnischen Piloten – Tomas Triisa (#168) und Kris Maennama (#167). Und wenn Box im Ziel 2 Minuten Vorsprung hatte, trennten die Landsleute nur 25 Sekunden.
In der Car Cross-Country-Klasse war Ronald Schoolderman (#219, Mitsubishi ASX) der einzige Pilot, der es schaffte, in der Mixed-Wertung mit SSVs eine Top-3-Position zu erreichen. Damit sicherte sich der Niederländer den Etappensieg in der Autoklasse, gefolgt von seinen Landsleuten Rik Van Den Brink (#201, Borgward, Gesamt-7.) und Dave Klaassen (#208, Nissan, 12. in der Mixed-Wertung). Schoolderman hat etwa 5 Minuten auf seinen Hauptkonkurrenten.
Schließlich hatte Joel Purga (#329) aus Estland mit den Extreme Cars einen weiteren großartigen Tag und gewann auch die erste Etappe der Rallye Breslau 2022, nachdem er dasselbe im Prolog getan hatte. Der Pilot mit seinem einzigartigen Mulkland MOS1-Prototyp überholte mit fast 12 Minuten den Franzosen Romain Porchere (Construmental XR4, #310) und mit einer weiteren Minute Benoit Bonnefoy (Mercedes Proto, #328), ebenfalls aus Frankreich.
Etappe 2 der Rallye Breslau 2022 bietet fast die gleichen Strecken wie Etappe 1, aber die gleichen Gruppen (Enduro + ATV+ Trucks und Cars/SSV) werden zwei der gezeiteten Abschnitte in entgegengesetzte Richtungen fahren. Diesmal starten die leichtesten Fahrzeuge und die Giganten mit der längsten Wertungsprüfung, und die Autos und Buggys müssen mit der 88 km langen Strecke Vorlieb nehmen.

After the ceremonial start and the short qualifying stage in Sunday, the competitors entered the first real full day of Rallye Breslau 2022 in Monday. The start of Leg 1 was late due to some military activities in the area, and participants had enough time to prepare their roadbooks and vehicles. There were 3 selective sections (two short and one longer) on 3 different terrains around Zagan in Polish Sahara polygons on the agenda. Total distance was 186 km with 59 km liaisons and 127 km against the clock, and the terrain offered fast and dusty tracks with tricky navigation. Unfortunately, due to the permanent army trainings, very often day and night, the access to terrains where the extreme category would feel at home, was not permitted. But for sure they enjoyed the mighty power of the Polish Sahara and the difficult tank roads, making one feel happy and relieved when reaching the finish.
The racing vehicles started in two groups with a mixed order, according the times from the prologue: Enduro and ATV + Trucks from all classes, and SSV + cars. The groups drove the same stages, but with rotation for each group, with two separate prestarts. Thus, the first group started a stage which was third for the second group, etc.
The group of the bikes, quads and trucks faced first the two shorter timed sections and for the dessert took the bigger stage. On two wheels, it was Nerimantas Jucius (#28, Husqvarna) who take command on the rankings after Leg 1. The pilot from Lithuania finished with 8 minutes advance to Eduard Hillebrand from Nederland (#75, KTM) and few more seconds to Tomasz Dabrowski Poland (#86, KTM).
In the ATV class we saw second consecutive triple stage victory for Poland and Polaris, after Rafal Jawien (#69), Marcin Wilkolek (#80) and Ireneusz Ostafin (77) were the fastest pilots on the track. Jawien has tiny 40 seconds in front of Wikolek, who is leading Ostafin with only half a minute.
The stage was the same for both cross country and extreme trucks (it was the same with the car classes). In the rally-raid truck class, Florian Skibba (#412) from Germany with Iveco made a good day and finished as a winner, 13 minutes in front of the Dutch pilot Gerrit Zuurmond (#420, MAN). Third for the day was another driver from Nederland – Aad Van Velsen (#404, Scania). In the extreme truck class, two German Unimogs was with the best times with Steffen Braun (#453) like a leg winner and Alfred Wemhof (#468) like runner-up. The third place was for the pilot from the Big Truck class Oliver Leyh (#457, MAN KAT), also from Germany.
The second group – those of the SSVs and cars (both CC and EX), contrary started with the biggest stage and after drove the two smaller sections. In the lightweight class of the SSV machines Kees Box (#106) from Nederland successfully finished the battle with two Estonian pilots – Tomas Triisa (#168) and Kris Maennama (#167). And if Box had 2 minutes advance at the finish, the compatriots were separated by only 25 seconds.
As for the Car Cross-Country class, Ronald Schoolderman (#219, Mitsubishi ASX) was the only pilot who managed to finish with top 3 postion in the mixed rankings with SSVs. Thus, the Dutch driver took the stage win in the car class, followed by his fellow countrymen Rik Van Den Brink (#201, Borgward, 7th overall) and Dave Klaassen (#208, Nissan, 12th in the mixed rankings). Schoolderman has some 5 minutes to his main rival.
Finally, with the Extreme Cars, Joel Purga (#329) from Estonia had another great day, wining also the first leg of Rallye Breslau 2022 after he did the same in the prologue. The pilot with his unique Mulkland MOS1 prototype, overpassed with almost 12 minutes the Frenchman Romain Porchere (Construmental XR4, #310) and with one more minute Benoit Bonnefoy (Mercedes Proto, #328), also from France.
Leg 2 of Rallye Breslau 2022 will offer almost the same routes as Leg 1, but the same groups (Enduro + ATV+ Trucks and Cars/SSV) will drive two of the timed sections in the opposite directions. This time, the lightest vehicles and the behemoths will start with the longest special stage, and the cars and buggies will finish with the 88 km track for dessert.
