Der GP von Rumänien, der in der stimmungsvollen BTArena ausgetragen wird, wird sicherlich noch in den kommenden Jahren unvergesslich bleiben, da die enge Strecke in fast jeder Kurve für Drama sorgte. Es ist schon ein paar Saisons her, dass ein Fahrer in der Lage war, das mächtige Paar Billy BOLT und Jonny WALKER zu besiegen, wenn es um die AKRAPOVIC Superpole ging, aber heute Abend in Cluj war es der Schwede Eddie KARLSSON mit der schnellsten Zeit und der besten Startplatzauswahl. Dieses großartige Ergebnis zahlte sich aus, denn KARLSSON gewann auch den Airoh Holeshot-Preis und belegte beim GP den fünften Gesamtrang: sein bestes Ergebnis des Jahres.

Billy BOLT – Stärker als der Schmerz

In der vierten Runde des Rennens machte Billy BOLT (GBR-Husqvarna) einen kleinen Fehler, der sein bereits verletztes linkes Bein erschütterte. Der Husky-Fahrer verspürte bei jedem Hindernis, dem er folgen musste, extreme Steifheit und Schmerzen, und er konnte nichts tun, um sich gegen einen angreifenden Jonny WALKER (GBR-Beta) zu wehren, der schnell die Kontrolle übernahm und auf dem kompakten Streckenabschnitt stark aussah. Trotz seines großen Leidens gelang es BOLT, trotz zahlreicher Stürze in der mittlerweile berüchtigten Kurve namens „Devil’s Hand“ auf dem zweiten Platz zu bleiben. BOLT schaffte es, die Ziellinie vor Manuel LETTENBICHLER (GER-KTM) zu überqueren, der nach einem Sturz zu Beginn des Rennens ein verrücktes Comeback hinlegte. Jonny WALKER gewann das Rennen und stellte seinen Rivalen den Fehdehandschuh hin.

Im zweiten Rennen mit der traditionellen umgekehrten Startaufstellung befand sich WALKER aufgrund seines unglücklichen Sturzes in der Akrapovic Superpole in der ersten Reihe. Der Beta-Fahrer hatte gute Chancen auf einen weiteren Rennsieg, aber als er von außen startete, geriet er in den chaotischen Anfangskurven in Schwierigkeiten. Mitch BRIGHTMORE (GBR-GASGAS) war der Spitzenreiter, aber bald folgte ihm BOLT, während WALKER auf dem dritten Platz lag. Alles änderte sich, als BOLT erneut stürzte und bis auf den fünften Platz zurückfiel, während WALKER es schaffte, BRIGHTMORE zu überholen und sich den ersten Platz zu sichern. Alle Zuschauer gingen davon aus, dass BOLT mit seinem schmerzenden Bein und dem nun zurückgebliebenen Bein nicht in der Lage sein würde, diese Behinderung zu überwinden. Allerdings lässt er sich einfach nicht unterkriegen und der dreifache Weltmeister besiegte seine Gegner geduldig einen nach dem anderen. Als sein Rivale näher kam, ließ WALKER sein Motorrad nur eine Runde vor dem Ziel fallen, und BOLT setzte sich sofort durch, übernahm die Kontrolle über das Rennen und sah als Erster die Zielflagge. Er gewann vor WALKER, während Dominik OLSZOWY (POL-Rieju) eine großartige Form zeigte und Dritter wurde.

Vor dem letzten Rennen lagen die beiden Engländer punktgleich (jeweils 37 Punkte), sodass es beim Finale unter den Lichtern von Cluj nur noch um alles ging. Eddie KARLSSON stürmte erneut zu einem frühen Airoh-Holeshot, während BOLT, WALKER und LETTENBICHLER dahinter reihten und sich einen großartigen Kampf lieferten. Während sich jeder über die körperliche Verfassung des Husqvarna-Fahrers nach einer so intensiven Nacht wunderte, jubelte die Menge, als er erneut siegte und an die Spitze schoss. Tatsächlich dominierte er das letzte Rennen des Abends und holte sich seinen vierten Gesamtsieg in vier Runden. Jonny WALKER musste sich noch einmal vor seinem Landsmann verbeugen. LETTENBICHLER holte seinen zweiten Podiumsplatz in zwei Rennen und bewies damit seine schnelle Anpassung an SuperEnduro. Hinter diesem unglaublichen Trio standen OLSZOWY, KARLSSON, Mitch BRIGHTMORE und Riejus Neuzugang Will HOARE (GBR).

Unterdessen festigt Billy BOLT in der Meisterschaftswertung seinen Vorsprung vor WALKER. Er liegt nun 19 Punkte vor dem Beta-Fahrer. Will HOARE ist auf den 4. Gesamtrang zurückgefallen, während LETTENBICHLER 7 Punkte vor ihm liegt.

Ashton BRIGHTMORE makellos in der Juniorenwertung

Ashton BRIGHTMORE, der 17-jährige Brite, zeigte beim vierten GP der Saison in der Junior-Kategorie erneut eine spektakuläre Leistung. Der GASGAS-Fahrer verfügt über Fähigkeiten, die seine Jahre übertreffen, selbst auf einer so schwierigen Strecke, und er gewann im ersten Rennen, während Marc FERNANDEZ SERRA (ESP-KTM) vor seinem Teamkollegen Suff SELLA (ISR-KTM) den zweiten Platz belegte. Rennen 2 war eine weitere Meisterklasse von BRIGHTMORE, während SELLA den zweiten Platz belegte und Raul GUIMERA (ESP-Sherco) die ersten drei Plätze belegte. Im letzten Rennen wollte der israelische Fahrer beweisen, dass er einen Sieg vor sich hatte, was ihm mit Zuversicht vor BRIGHTMORE und FERNANDEZ gelang. Trotz der Stärke und Entschlossenheit von Suff SELLA (ISR-KTM) an diesem Abend reichte es einfach nicht aus, um zu verhindern, dass sein Freund und Rivale BRIGHTMORE den Gesamtsieg holte und dabei die Titelführung zurückeroberte. Marc FERNANDEZ SERRA (ESP-KTM) komplettierte das letzte Podium.

In der Juniorenwertung liegt BRIGHTMORE (215 Punkte) mit drei Punkten Vorsprung vor SELLA (212 Punkte). Der Kampf verspricht so intensiv wie eh und je zu werden, während wir in Ungarn in die nächste Runde gehen. Roland LISZKA (HUN-KTM) bleibt trotz eines glanzlosen GP mit 158 ​​Punkten Dritter in der Gesamtwertung.

Europapokal: LEON nah an der Krone

Der Spanier Xavi LEON SOLE gewann sein drittes Event im European SuperEnduro Cup in ebenso vielen Runden. Durch den Sieg bei den beiden Rennen in Rumänien verschaffte sich der GASGAS-Fahrer einen echten psychologischen und mathematischen Vorteil gegenüber seinen Gegnern. Der aufstrebende Amerikaner Dustin MCCARTHY (USA-Beta) und der Pole Maciej WIECKOWSKI (GASGAS) komplettierten das letzte Podium des Abends. Es war ein Grand Prix zum Vergessen für Alessandro AZZALINI (ITA-GASGAS), der nur den 6. Platz belegte. In der Europacup-Wertung liegt LEON SOLE mit 112 Punkten an der Spitze, 31 vor WIECKOWSKI, AZZALINI ist Dritter, einen Punkt hinter dem Polen.

Der Große Preis von Rumänien war ein Höhepunkt der Saison. Leidenschaftliche, sachkundige und begeisterte Fans feuerten die Stars des Sports an, als sie sich auf einer der bisher härtesten Strecken stellten. Die MotoZ FIM SuperEnduro-Weltmeisterschaft beginnt nun ihren zweiten Teil der Saison mit dem GP von Ungarn am 3. Februar in Budapest.

Billy Bolt: „Was kann ich sagen? Ich hatte im ersten Rennen große Probleme, in einer Runde habe ich über der Ziellinie einen Gang höher geschaltet und irgendetwas fühlte sich in meinem Bein wirklich nicht gut an. Es war irgendwie eingesperrt. Im letzten Rennen fühlte sich die Verletzung dann nicht so schlimm an und ich konnte mich hinter Jonny halten. Ich versuche immer, hinter ihm zu bleiben und ihn zu zermürben. Mit den Schmerzen war es nicht einfach, aber ich bekam eine Nachricht von einer meiner besten Freundinnen, die besagte: „Du hörst nicht auf, wenn es wehtut, sondern wenn es vorbei ist“ – das hat mir wirklich geholfen, heute Abend durchzukommen. Ich freue mich wirklich, meinen Vorsprung vor Ungarn ausbauen zu können, aber beim nächsten Mal muss ich in der Superpole besser abschneiden, weil es mich ärgert, dass ich heute Abend die Extrapunkte verpasst habe.“

Jonny Walker:
„Die Strecke war heute Abend eng und technisch und nachdem ich die Superpole vermasselt hatte, war ich fest entschlossen, gute Starts zu ergattern und Billy einen Kampf zu liefern. Im ersten Rennen lag ich in einer guten Position und konnte gewinnen. Damit war ich zufrieden, aber ich wusste, dass ich für das Rennen mit der umgekehrten Startaufstellung auf der „falschen“ Seite der Startaufstellung stehen würde, und es war nicht einfach. Billy ist eine Maschine, und am Ende hat er mich besiegt. Bei diesem Layout war es für uns alle körperlich ein schwieriger Abend, aber ich habe das Gefühl, dass ich mich mit jeder Runde verbessere.“

Manuel Lettenbichler: „Ich mache definitiv Fortschritte und finde in jeder Runde mehr Tempo. Die beiden Spitzenreiter liegen in Sachen Geschwindigkeit immer noch ein wenig vorn, aber ich bin zufrieden mit meinem heutigen Fahrverhalten. Ich versuche jedoch wirklich, diesen Abstand zu verringern, und tatsächlich konnte ich im ersten Rennen einen Großteil des Rennens durchhalten. Die Rennen sind einfach so intensiv und körperlich anspruchsvoll, aber ich lerne und hoffe, dass ich die Geschwindigkeit und das, was ich hier in Rumänien gelernt habe, nach Budapest mitnehmen kann.“

Ashton Brightmore:
„Die Meisterschaft ist verrückt; In jeder Runde verändern wir es und tauschen die Positionen, was es interessant macht. Ich möchte jede Runde aufs Motorrad steigen und versuchen zu gewinnen. Ich denke, es wäre ziemlich langweilig, wenn nur jemand die ganze Zeit führen würde, aber wir haben gute Kämpfe und es ist nicht klar, wer gewinnen wird. Ich bin hungrig danach und Suff auch, ich liebe es! Ich habe heute Abend versucht, gute Starts zu erwischen, auf den Fußrasten zu bleiben und fehlerfrei zu bleiben. Ich bin wirklich zufrieden mit meinem Fahren und der Tatsache, dass ich das rote Kennzeichen bekommen habe.“

The Romanian GP, held in the atmospheric BTArena, is sure to be a memorable one for years to come as the tight track brought drama on almost every corner. It has been a few seasons since a rider has been capable of defeating the mighty pairing of Billy BOLT and Jonny WALKER when it comes to the AKRAPOVIC Superpole, but tonight in Cluj it was Sweden’s Eddie KARLSSON with the fastest time and the top grid pick. This great result paid off as KARLSSON also claimed the Airoh Holeshot prize and finished fifth overall in the GP: his best result of the year.

Billy BOLT – Stronger Than the Pain

During the fourth lap of the race, Billy BOLT (GBR-Husqvarna) made a small mistake which jolted his already injured left leg. The Husky rider felt extreme stiffness and pain on every obstacle to follow, and he could do nothing to fight back against a charging Jonny WALKER (GBR-Beta) who quickly took control and looked strong around the compact layout. Despite his intense suffering, BOLT managed to stay in second place despite numerous falls on the now infamous corner named the “Devil’s Hand”. BOLT managed to cross the finish line ahead of Manuel LETTENBICHLER (GER-KTM) who made a crazy comeback after falling at the start of the race. Jonny WALKER won the race and laid down the gauntlet for his rivals.

In the second race with its traditional reversed grid, WALKER found himself on the front row due to his unfortunate crash in the Akrapovic Superpole. The Beta rider stood a good chance of another race win, but starting from the outside he found himself caught up in the messy early corners. Mitch BRIGHTMORE (GBR-GASGAS) was the pack leader, but he was soon followed by BOLT, while WALKER was sitting in third place. It was all change when BOLT was victim to another fall, and dropped all the way down to fifth, while WALKER managed to overtake BRIGHTMORE for first place. All onlookers assumed that BOLT, with his painful leg and now trailing behind, would not be able to overcome this handicap. However, there is simply no keeping him down and the triple world champion patiently picked off his opponents one by one. With his rival closing in WALKER dropped his bike just one lap from the finish, and BOLT immediately swept through to take control of the race and see the chequered flag first. He won ahead of WALKER while Dominik OLSZOWY (POL-Rieju) showed great form to take third.

Before the last race, the two Englishmen were tied (37 points each), meaning it was all to play for in the finale under the lights in Cluj. Eddie KARLSSON once again rushed to an early Airoh Holeshot, while BOLT, WALKER and LETTENBICHLER slotted in behind and became engaged in a superb battle. With everyone wondering about the physical condition of the Husqvarna rider after such an intense night, the crowd roared when he once again conquered and shot into the lead. In fact, he dominated the last race of the night to take his fourth overall victory from four rounds. Jonny WALKER was forced to once again bow to his compatriot. LETTENBICHLER took his second podium in two races, proving his quick adaptation to SuperEnduro. Behind this incredible trio were OLSZOWY, KARLSSON, Mitch BRIGHTMORE and Rieju’s new signing, Will HOARE (GBR).

Meanwhile, in the championship standings, Billy BOLT consolidates his lead over WALKER. He now sits 19 points ahead of the Beta rider. Will HOARE has been bumped down to 4th overall, as LETTENBICHLER moves ahead of him by 7 points.

Ashton BRIGHTMORE Flawless in Junior

Ashton BRIGHTMORE, the 17-year-old Brit, once again put in a spectacular performance during the fourth GP of the season in the Junior category. The GASGAS rider has skills beyond his years, even on such a difficult track, and he took victory in the first race while Marc FERNANDEZ SERRA (ESP-KTM) snatched second ahead of his team-mate, Suff SELLA (ISR-KTM). Race 2 was another masterclass from BRIGHTMORE, while SELLA managed second, and Raul GUIMERA (ESP-Sherco) completed the top three. In the last race, the Israeli rider was out to prove that he had a win in him, something he achieved with confidence ahead of BRIGHTMORE and FERNANDEZ. Despite the strength and determination of Suff SELLA (ISR-KTM) on the night, it was simply not enough to prevent his friend and rival, BRIGHTMORE from taking the overall spoils and regain the title lead in the process. Marc FERNANDEZ SERRA (ESP-KTM) completed the final podium.

In the Junior class standings, BRIGHTMORE (215 points) is ahead of SELLA (212 points) by three points. The fight promises to be as intense as ever as we head into the next round in Hungary. Roland LISZKA (HUN-KTM), despite a lackluster GP, remains third overall with 158 points.

European Cup: LEON Close to the Crown

Spain’s Xavi LEON SOLE won his third event of the European SuperEnduro Cup in as many rounds contested. By winning the two races in Romania, the GASGAS rider gained a real psychological and mathematical advantage over his opponents. Emerging American Dustin MCCARTHY (USA-Beta) and the Poland’s Maciej WIECKOWSKI (GASGAS) completed the evening’s final podium. It was a Grand Prix to forget for Alessandro AZZALINI (ITA-GASGAS) only 6th. In the European Cup standings LEON SOLE is in the lead with 112 points, 31 ahead of WIECKOWSKI, AZZALINI is third, one point behind the Pole.

The Romanian Grand Prix was a standout of the season with a passionate, knowledgeable and excitable fans cheering on the stars of the sport as they took on one of the hardest tracks so far. The MotoZ FIM SuperEnduro World Championship now begins its second part of the season with the Hungarian GP on February 3rd in Budapest.

What They Said: 

Billy Bolt: “What can I say? I struggled a lot in the first race, on one lap I changed up a gear over the finish line and something really didn’t feel good in my leg. It kind of locked up. Then in the last race the injury didn’t feel too bad and I was able to hang in behind Jonny, I always try and stick behind him and wear him down. It hasn’t been easy with the pain, but I had message from one of my best friends that said ‘You don’t stop when it hurts, you stop when it’s over’ – that really helped me get through tonight. I’m really happy to extend my lead going into Hungary, but I need to do better in Superpole next time because I’m annoyed that I missed the extra points tonight.”

Jonny Walker:
“The track was tight and technical tonight and after I messed up the Superpole I was determined to try and get good starts and give Billy a fight. In the first race I was in a good spot and I managed to win, I felt happy with that but I knew I’d be on the ‘wrong’ side of the gate for the reverse grid race and it wasn’t easy. Billy is a machine, and he got the better of me in the end. A difficult night for all of us physically with this layout, but I feel like I’m improving with each round.”

Manuel Lettenbichler: “I’m definitely making improvements and finding more pace at every round. The top two guys are still a little way ahead in terms of speed, but I’m happy with how I rode today. I’m really trying to get that gap down though and in fact, on the first race, I was able to hang on for quite a lot of the moto. The races are just so intense, so physically demanding, but I’m learning and hopefully I can carry the speed and what I’ve learned here in Romania on to Budapest.”

Ashton Brightmore:
“The championship is crazy; every round we’re changing it up and switching positions which makes it interesting. Every round I want to get on the bike and try to win, I think it would be pretty boring if it was just someone leading the whole way, but we have good battles and it’s not clear who will win. I’m hungry for it and so is Suff, I’m loving it! I tried to get good starts tonight, stay on the footpegs and stay mistake free. I’m really happy with my riding and the fact I got the red plate.”
