Und so ging die Paulo Duarte FIM EnduroGP-Weltmeisterschaft 2023 zu Ende. Der letzte Renntag in Santiago do Cacem für den siebten und letzten Lauf der Saison erwies sich als spannend, da die restlichen diesjährigen Weltmeister gekrönt wurden.
Garcia holt sich den letzten Saisonsieg
Als Sieger des ersten Tages und frisch gekrönter Enduro1-Weltmeister ließ Josep Garcia von Red Bull KTM Factory Racing die Dinge heute Morgen nicht langsam angehen. Auf der Mission, sich in der EnduroGP-Wertung den dritten oder besseren Platz zu sichern, meisterte der Spanier die ersten fünf Sonderprüfungen mit Bravour. Dabei baute er früh einen Vorsprung von 15 Sekunden auf Steve Holcombe auf, während Andrea Verona von GASGAS Factory Racing sechs Sekunden dahinter auf dem dritten Platz landete. Da Nathan Watson von RedMoto Honda nur ein Zehntel hinter Verona lag, sorgte dies für einen Vier-Fahrer-Kampf um den letzten Podiumsplatz der Saison.
Garcia fühlte sich in den zerkauten Sand-Sonderprüfungen wohl und machte weiter, um sich letztendlich den Sieg zu sichern. Der Spanier hatte alles getan, um seinen Platz im Endklassement zu festigen. Aber hinter ihm war es scharf. Da Watson seine beste Leistung der Saison zeigte, machte er Verona das Leben schwer.
Beim letzten POLISPORT Extreme Test lag Watson auf dem zweiten Platz. Holcombe hatte 12 Sekunden Rückstand, Verona lag weitere drei Sekunden hinter dem Vierten. Berücksichtigt man noch den angreifenden Jamie McCanney (Fast Eddy Racing), der nur drei Sekunden hinter Verona lag, war es zu knapp, um einen Sieg davonzutragen.
Holcombe holt sich den EnduroGP-Weltmeistertitel
Holcombe versuchte zu entscheiden, ob er ein Top-3-Ergebnis anstrebte oder sich den EnduroGP-Titel sicherte, und entschied sich in der Schlussphase des Tages klugerweise für die letztere Option. Als er in der Schlussphase schließlich auf den fünften Platz zurückfiel, war das mehr als genug, um ihn zum EnduroGP-Weltmeister 2023 zu krönen und sich den Enduro2-Weltmeistertitel zu holen.
Watson würde sich auf dem zweiten Platz behaupten und sein bestes Saisonergebnis erzielen. Da Verona nicht in der Lage war, sich gegen den Honda-Fahrer durchzusetzen, nutzte Garcia das Ergebnis und beendete die Saison als Zweiter hinter Holcombe in der endgültigen EnduroGP-Wertung, wobei er Verona nur um einen Punkt schlug. Auch McCanney erlebte einen großartigen Abschluss seines Jahres und beendete seinen Tag auf dem vierten Platz.
Dramatisches Ende des Enduro3-Titelkampfs
Nachdem sich Garcia und Holcombe die Enduro1- und Enduro2-Titel sicherten, war das spannendste Ende des Jahres Enduro3. Brad Freeman begann den Tag mit scheinbar komfortablen 12 Punkten Vorsprung vor seinem nächsten Rivalen Mikael Persson (Husqvarna).
Als er die ersten beiden Tests gewann, sah es für Freeman wie gewohnt aus, aber im Laufe des Tages geriet er in Schwierigkeiten. Das Abrutschen auf den sechsten Platz und der anschließende Tagessieg von Persson führten dazu, dass viele hektisch nach dem Enduro3-Ergebnis rechneten. Am Ende gewann Freeman den Titel mit nur zwei Punkten Vorsprung und wurde zum Enduro3-Weltmeister gekrönt.
Etchells wurde Junior-Enduro-Weltmeister
Der Ausgang der GALFER FIM Junior Enduro World Championship wurde zwischen Jed Etchells (Fantic) und Albin Norrbin (Fantic) ausgetragen. Etchells begann den Tag mit sieben Punkten Vorsprung vor Norrbin. Wenn Norrbin gewann, musste Etchells Dritter oder besser werden, um seinen ersten Weltmeistertitel zu gewinnen.
Als Sieger des Eröffnungstests hatte Etchells einen großartigen Start. Doch in der zweiten Tageshälfte war Norrbin in Höchstform. Der Schwede gewann die letzten sechs Tests des Tages und holte sich den Sieg. Der Australier Kyron Bacon (Yamaha) fuhr gut und schob sich zwischen Norrbin und Etchells auf den zweiten Platz.
Da Etchells jedoch auf dem dritten Platz blieb, reichte es, um sich den GALFER FIM Junior Enduro World Championship zu sichern. Obwohl er in der Junioren-Gesamtwertung gegen Etchells verlor, gewann Norrbin den Junior2-Titel.
Nachdem Kevin Cristino (Fantic) und Jane Daniels (Fantic) bereits am ersten Tag die Jugend-Enduro- und Frauen-Enduro-Titel gewonnen hatten, gewann Cristino am zweiten Tag erneut und holte damit 11 Siege im Jahr 2023. Das ist eine klare Siegesserie In der Magnorange FIM Women’s Enduro Championship blieb Daniels 2023 ungeschlagen.
Steve Holcombe (Beta): „Ich war heute nervös. Es ist schon eine Weile her, dass ich in der Lage war, einen Titel zu gewinnen, und ich wollte einfach nur meine Arbeit erledigen und keinen Fehler machen. Ich hatte einen guten Start in den Tag, verlor dann aber mitten am Tag meinen Rhythmus gegenüber den Top-Jungs. Aber ich wusste, wo ich sein musste, also konzentrierte ich mich darauf und holte den Titel nach Hause. In einem Jahr EnduroGP- und Enduro2-Weltmeister zu werden, ist unglaublich. Ich habe nie davon geträumt, neunmaliger Weltmeister zu werden, daher wird es eine Weile dauern, bis ich diesen Moment begreife.“
Brad Freeman (Beta): „Ich freue mich, mit dem Enduro3-Weltmeistertitel nach Hause zu kommen. Es ist ein bisschen bittersüß, die EnduroGP-Führung verloren zu haben und zu versuchen, Verletzungen zu überstehen. Aber trotz des harten Jahres habe ich es mit meinem neunten Weltmeistertitel abgeschlossen. Ich bin jetzt bereit, mich auszuruhen!“
Jed Etchells (Fantic): „Ich bin überglücklich, nach einem fantastischen Jahr den Juniorentitel zu holen. Mein Team hat so hart gearbeitet, um dies zu erreichen, und ich kann ihnen nicht genug dafür danken, dass sie mir dabei geholfen haben, Weltmeister zu werden. Wir werden heute Abend feiern!“

And just like that the 2023 Paulo Duarte FIM EnduroGP World Championship was brought to a close. The final day of racing in Santiago do Cacem for the seventh and final round of the season proved exciting as the remainder of this year’s world champions were crowned.
Garcia takes final victory of the season
As day one winner and the freshly crowned Enduro1 World Champion, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Josep Garcia was not taking things slowly this morning. On a mission to secure third or better in the EnduroGP standings, the Spaniard blitzed the opening five special tests. In doing so he built up an early lead of 15 seconds over Steve Holcombe, with GASGAS Factory Racing’s Andrea Verona six seconds back in third. With RedMoto Honda’s Nathan Watson just one tenth behind Verona, it ensured a four-rider battle for the final podium of the season.
Comfortable in the chewed-up sandy special tests, Garcia pushed on to ultimately secure the victory. The Spaniard had done all he could to bolster his place in the final standings. Behind him though and things were spicy. With Watson putting in his best ride of the season, he was making life difficult for Verona.
Exiting the final POLISPORT Extreme Test, Watson sat in second position. Holcombe was 12 seconds behind, with Verona a further three seconds adrift in fourth. Factor in a charging Jamie McCanney (Fast Eddy Racing), just three seconds behind Verona, and it was all too close to call.
Holcombe claims EnduroGP World Championship
Trying to decide between pushing on for a top-three result or wrapping up the EnduroGP title, Holcombe wisely opted for the latter option in the closing stages of the day. Eventually slipping back to fifth in the closing stages, it was more than enough to see him crowned the 2023 EnduroGP World Champion, along with taking the Enduro2 world title.
Watson would stand firm in second to record his best result of the season. With Verona unable to get the better of the Honda rider, it saw Garcia capitalise on the result and end the season as runner-up to Holcombe in the final EnduroGP standings, beating Verona by just one point. Also enjoying a great end to his year, McCanney ended his day in fourth.
Dramatic end to Enduro3 title fight
With Garcia and Holcombe locking down the Enduro1 and Enduro2 titles respectively, the most nail-biting end to the year was in Enduro3. Brad Freeman began the day with a comfortable looking 12 points over nearest rival Mikael Persson (Husqvarna).
Winning the opening two tests, things looked like business as usual for Freeman, but as the day wore on he was in trouble. Slipping down the order to an eventual sixth place, and with Persson going on to win the day, resulted in many frantically doing the maths for the Enduro3 outcome. In the end, Freeman won the title by just two points and was crowned the Enduro3 World Champion.
Etchells crowned Junior Enduro World Champion
The outcome of the GALFER FIM Junior Enduro World Championship was played out between Jed Etchells (Fantic) and Albin Norrbin (Fantic). Etchells began the day with seven points in hand over Norrbin. If Norrbin won, Etchells needed to finish third or better to win his first world championship title.
Topping the opening test, Etchells was off to a great start. But in the second half of the day, Norrbin was on top form. The Swede won the final six tests of the day to take the win. Australia’s Kyron Bacon (Yamaha) was riding well and slipped in between Norrbin and Etchells to place second.
However, with Etchells hanging onto third, it was enough to seal him the GALFER FIM Junior Enduro World Championship. Although losing out to Etchells in the overall Junior standings, Norrbin did win the Junior2 title.
With the Youth Enduro and Women’s Enduro titles already wrapped up on day one by Kevin Cristino (Fantic) and Jane Daniels (Fantic) respectively, day two saw Cristino win once again to make it 11 victories in 2023. Making it a clean sweep of victories in the Magnorange FIM Women’s Enduro Championship, Daniels remained unbeaten in 2023.
Steve Holcombe (Beta): “I was feeling the nerves today. It’s been a while since I was in this position of winning a title and I just wanted to get the job done and not make a mistake. I had a good start to the day then kinda lost my rhythm to the top guys in the middle of the day. But I knew where I needed to be, so I focused on that and brought the title home. Becoming EnduroGP and Enduro2 World Champion in one year is incredible. I never dreamt of being a nine-time world champion, so it’s going to take a while for this moment to sink in.”
Brad Freeman (Beta): “I’m happy to come home with the world title in Enduro3. It’s a little bit bittersweet having lost the EnduroGP lead and trying to ride through injuries. But despite the tough year, I’ve ended it with my ninth world title. I’m ready to rest up now!”
Jed Etchells (Fantic): “I’m over the moon to come away with the Junior title after what’s been an amazing year. My team worked so hard to get this over the line and I can’t thank them enough for helping me become a world champion. We’ll celebrate tonight!”
