STAGE 4: Im richtigen Flow kommen Tim und Tom weiter nach vorne. Während der vierten Etappe der Rallye Dakar fanden Tim und Tom Coronel den richtigen Rhythmus. Nach und nach rückten sie in der Gesamtwertung vor und wurden immer weniger vom Staub beeinträchtigt. Toms Navigation war heute gut und das gab viel Vertrauen in den Century CR6. Die Brüder sind nach dieser sehr schnellen Etappe sehr zufrieden. Tim war mit Toms Navigation sehr zufrieden: „Es war ein toller Tag, aber was ich heute für das Cleverste hielt, war die Navigation.“ Auf diesen Ebenen war Tom pünktlich und hatte zur richtigen Zeit die richtige Richtung. Das hat sich sehr gut angefühlt und gibt einem auch Selbstvertrauen. Dann können Sie den Schwung noch ein bisschen aufrechterhalten. Das war also wirklich schön.‘ Die Etappe war sehr schön, mit schnellen Abschnitten am Anfang. „Dort hatten wir noch Probleme mit dem Staub anderer Autos, aber ein paar haben wir wieder eingeholt.“ Wenn wir jetzt immer weiter vorankommen und mehr dorthin kommen, wo wir hinfahren sollen, dann hat man weniger Probleme damit. Auf diesen schnellen, flachen Abschnitten mussten wir wirklich blind nach dem Roadbook fahren, und das war wirklich cool zu navigieren.“ Am Ende der Etappe gab es noch einen weiteren Dünenabschnitt, bei dem die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Tim und Tom sehr gut war. „Da muss man auf Mütze fahren“, erklärte Tom. „Im Roadbook erfahren Sie die Richtung, Ihr Cap und wie lange Sie es behalten müssen.“ Wenn Sie dann den Wegpunkt haben, ändert sich die Obergrenze und Sie müssen gut darauf reagieren. Wir mussten zweimal ganz kurz hinschauen, haben es aber einfach gut hinbekommen. „In diesen Dünen ist Tim auch sehr schnell gefahren, schönes Tempo.“ Morgen steht die fünfte Etappe auf dem Plan und sie führt von Al Hofuf nach Shubaytah. Auf dem Papier sieht es wie eine einfache Etappe aus, mit nur 118 Kilometern Geschwindigkeit, aber das ist es ganz sicher nicht. Bis zum Start gibt es eine lange Liaison und dann tauchen die Teilnehmer in den Sand des Empty Quarter ein.

STAGE 5: Alles läuft gut für Tim und Tom auf der ersten Dünen-Etappe. Während der fünften Etappe der Rallye Dakar sehen Tim und Tom Coronel nichts als Sand. Auf einer schönen Etappe in den Dünen bleiben sie nicht hängen. Die Brüder bekommen nach einigen unangenehmen Landungen zwar ein paar Schläge ab, aber der Century CR6 hat damit kein Problem. Toms größte Sorge auf der Etappe war der Reifendruck. „Ich denke, das ist gut gelaufen. Ich bin nicht nur ein Navigator, sondern natürlich auch ein Fahrer, also spüre ich die Traktion. Das fühlte sich einfach gut an, also hatten wir das Recht. „Im letzten Abschnitt hatten wir den Druck sogar sehr niedrig eingestellt, sodass wir sie noch etwas aufpumpen mussten, bevor wir auf den Asphalt kamen.“ Es war die erste Etappe, die im Wesentlichen nur aus Sand bestand. „Es war eine wirklich schöne Etappe“, sagt Tim, „schön in den Dünen und sonst nur Sand.“ Dazwischen gab es einige üble Rückschläge, die ein paar Mal getroffen wurden. Aber das Auto fühlt sich gut an, also ist das kein Problem. Unterwegs bekamen wir erneut einen Alarm, das müssen wir im Biwak überprüfen. Weiter zum nächsten.‘ Die nächste Etappe ist ein Novum bei der Rallye Dakar. Die Organisation hat eine 48-Stunden-Etappe geplant. Der Start ist in Shubaytah und mit einem langen Lauf von 572 Kilometern im Tempo ist auch das Ziel dort. Die Etappe führt durch das leere Viertel und wird aus viel Sand und Dünen bestehen. Unterwegs stoßen die Teilnehmer auf mehrere Rastplätze. Wenn Sie diese nach 4 Stunden befahren, ist dies der Haltepunkt für die Nacht. Auf diesen Rastplätzen gibt es nur wenige Einrichtungen und auch die Kommunikation mit der Außenwelt wird nur sehr eingeschränkt möglich sein. Darüber hinaus folgen die Motorräder einer anderen Route als die Autos und Lastwagen, was die Herausforderung noch erhöht. Am Ziel angekommen geht es für die Teilnehmer direkt weiter nach Riad, wo am Samstag Ruhetag ist. Tim und Tom sind bereit für diese besondere und extralange Etappe.
STAGE 4: In the right flow, Tim and Tom move further forward During the fourth stage of the Dakar Rally, Tim and Tom Coronel found the right rhythm. Little by little they moved up in the standings and got less and less affected by dust. Tom’s navigation was sharp today and that provided a lot of confidence in the Century CR6. The brothers are very satisfied after this very fast stage. Tim was very pleased with Tom’s navigation, „It was a great day, but what I thought was the most clever thing today was the navigation. On those plains, Tom was right on time with the right direction at the right time. That felt very nice and that also gives you confidence. Then you can keep up the momentum a bit more. So that was really nice.“ The stage was very nice, with fast sections at the beginning. „There we still had some trouble with dust from other cars, but we caught up with a few again. We’re now moving further and further forward and getting more to where we’re supposed to drive, then you have less trouble with it. On those fast flat sections we really had to ride blind tothe roadbook and that was really cool to navigate.“ At the end of the stage there was another dune section where the cooperation between Tim and Tom was very good. „There you have to drive on cap,“ Tom explained. „The roadbook tells you the direction, your cap, and how long you have to keep it. Then when you have the waypoint then the cap changes and so you have to react well to that. We had to look very briefly twice, but we just did well. In those dunes Tim rode really fast too, nice pace.“ Tomorrow the fifth stage is on the schedule and it will go from Al Hofuf to Shubaytah. It looks like an easy stage on paper, with only 118 kilometers at speed, but it certainly isn’t. There is a long liaison up to the start and then the participants dive into the sand of the Empty Quarter.

STAGE 5: All goes well for Tim and Tom in first dune stage During the fifth stage of the Dakar Rally, Tim and Tom Coronel see nothing but sand. In a beautiful stage in the dunes they do not get stuck. The brothers do get a few knocks after some nasty landings, but the Century CR6 has no trouble with that. Tom’s main concern in the stage was tire pressure. „I think that went well. Besides being a navigator, I’m obviously a driver, so I do feel the traction. That felt just fine, so we had that right. In the last bit we had even set the pressure very low, so we had to pump them up a little bit before we hit the asphalt.“ It was the first stage that basically consisted of only sand. „It was a really nice stage,“ Tim says, „Nice in the dunes and otherwise just sand. There were some mean step downs in between, hit a few times. But the car feels good, so that’s not a problem. We did get another alarm along the way, so we’ll have to check that in the bivouac. On to the next one.“ The next stage is a novelty in the Dakar Rally. The organization has planned a 48-hour stage. The start is in Shubaytah and with a long run of 572 kilometers at speed, the finish is also there. The stage goes through the Empty Quarter and will consist of lots of sand and dunes. Along the way, participants will encounter a number of rest areas, if you drive in them after 4 hours, that will be the stopping point for that night. There are few facilities in these rest areas and there will also be very limited communication with the outside world. In addition, the motorcycles follow a different route than the cars and trucks, adding to the challenge. Once at the finish line, the participants will proceed directly to Riyadh where Saturday is the rest day. Tim and Tom are ready for this special and extra-long stage.
