DAS AFRICA ECO RACE IST IN DAKHLA
Diese letzte Etappe des AFRICA ECO RACE auf marokkanischem Boden wurde blitzschnell absolviert, wobei der 404 km lange selektive Abschnitt in 03:31:53 bei den Bikes und 03:31:53 bei den Autoa bewältigt wurde. Eine auf die Sekunde genau identische Zeit! Etwas, das es in der Geschichte der Cross-Country-Rallyes selten gab. Das liegt sicherlich daran, dass seit diesem Jahr die Autos, SSVs und LKWs alle für 20 Minuten neutralisiert werden, ebenso wie die Motorräder. Es ist ein ziemlicher Zufall, der es jedoch verdient, hervorgehoben zu werden.
Beim Motorradfahren nehmen wir die gleichen drei und fangen von vorne an. Diesmal ging der Kampf zwischen Jacopo CERUTTIs APRILIA und den beiden YAMAHAs von Pol TARRES und Alessandro BOTTURI zugunsten Letzterer aus. Der Italiener gewann mit einem Vorsprung von 00:01:57 auf seinen Teamkollegen und 00:03:57 auf CERUTTI. Mit anderen Worten: Die drei Fahrer überquerten zum dritten Mal in Folge gemeinsam die Ziellinie. Daher ist es unmöglich, sie in Marokko wirklich zu trennen, da CERRUTI, seit dem ersten Tag Spitzenreiter, 00:03:15 vor BOTTURI und weitere 30 Sekunden vor TARRES liegt. Diese Situation könnte sich in Mauretanien schnell ändern, da das Gelände so selektiv sein wird.
Dahinter hat der Schweizer Alexandre VAUDAN auf seiner KTM nach seinem gestrigen Navigationsfehler Abhilfe geschaffen. Er wurde Vierter, nur 00:10:50 hinter dem Sieger, vor dem APRILIA des Italieners Francesco MONTANARI mit 00:14:46 und dem Franzosen Atilio FERT auf einer KTM mit 00:15:46.
In der MOTUL XTREME RIDER-Klasse ging der Tagessieg an den sympathischen Franzosen Nicolas BOTTU auf KTM, während der Italiener Stefano CHIUSSI seinen Vorsprung vor dem Franzosen Antoine DETOURBET ausbaute, beide auf HUSQVARNA.
Auf vier Rädern hatte der belgische Fahrer Koen WAUTERS heute Morgen versprochen, alles zu geben, um zu gewinnen, denn diese fünfte Etappe des AFRICA ECO RACE bedeutete für ihn das Ende des Weges. Dieser Konkurrent ist auch in Belgien und den Niederlanden ein erfolgreicher Sänger und startet am 11. Januar eine Konzertreihe. Er musste daher für zwei Probentage nach Belgien zurückkehren. Koen WAUTERS hielt Wort: Am Steuer seines von Kris VEN DER STEEN perfekt gesteuerten TOYOTA Pick-Up siegte er mit einem Vorsprung von 00:02:46 vor den Ungarn Imre VARGA und Jozsef TOMA, ebenfalls auf einem TOYOTA. Auf dem 3. Platz finden wir den ersten SSV mit dem CAN AM von Carlos VENTO und Carlos RUIZ MORENO, immer noch mehr als 8 Minuten und 13 Sekunden vor Pierre-Louis LOUBET und François BORSOTTO. Eine logische Lücke auf diesem Geländetyp, der die Geschwindigkeit begünstigt, da SSVs auf maximal 130 km/h begrenzt sind, während Autos 170 km/h erreichen können. Der 3. Platz in der Gesamtwertung ging an den TOYOTA der belgischen Fahrer Pascal FEYRIN und Kurt KEYSERS, während der 3. Platz SSV an den CAN AM der portugiesischen Fahrer Ricardo SOUSA und Jorge BRANDAO ging. Das dritte Auto des Tages war der TOYOTA der Niederländer Teun STAM und Rene BRARGEMAN, die auch im T1 Diesel den 1. Platz belegten. In der vorläufigen Gesamtwertung führen die Franzosen Gautier PAULIN und Remi BOULANGER das Rennen in ihrem APACHE mit einem Vorsprung von 02:09:39 vor den POLARIS ihrer Landsleute Frédéric HENRICY und Eric BERSEY an, während Carlos VENTO und Carlos RUIZ MORENO auf Platz 02 liegen :36:01.
In der LKW-Kategorie gab es heute einen weiteren Sieg für den TATRA des Tschechen Tomas TOMECEK mit knapp 4 Minuten Vorsprung vor dem SCANIA von Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN und Marco SIEMONS. Die GINAF der Belgier Cedric FEYRIN, Björn BURGELMAN und Tom DE LEEUW belegten bei den Wüstenriesen den 3. Platz und belegten damit auch in der vorläufigen Truck-Gesamtwertung hinter Spitzenreiter TOMECEK und Zweitplatziertem VAN VELSEN den dritten Platz. Im Classic-Rennen liegen die Belgier Eric und Tom CLAEYS in ihrem TOYOTA Land Cruiser BJ73 nach den vier Gleichmäßigkeitszonen des Tages über 30 km, 31 km, 40 km und 51 km, die Marokko mit 15 absolvierten ZRs verlassen, an der Spitze. Sie liegen vor ihren Landsleuten Rene DECLERCQ und John DEMEESTER im BOMBARDIER Iltis, während der MITSUBISHI PAJERO des Österreichers Peter BRABECK-LETMATHE und des Franzosen Jean-Michel GAYTE auf dem 3. Platz liegt. Aber die Rangliste ist sehr eng, die Mannschaften kämpfen mit einer Punktzahl von null Punkten und nicht weniger als 12 ZRs, die auf dem sehr komplizierten mauretanischen Gelände übrig sind, um den Unterschied zu machen. Es ist also noch nichts entschieden!
Morgen, Sonntag, 7. Januar, können die Teilnehmer dieser 15. Ausgabe des AFRICA ECO RACE im Biwak Dakhla am Rande der Lagune neue Energie tanken und ihre Fahrzeuge überholen. Eine dringend benötigte Pause vor der zweiten Rennwoche in Mauretanien.

This 5th special stage starts from Laayoune. After a first part that is once again well known on the AFRICA ECO RACE, the reconnaissance team succeeded in finding new tracks that will shorten the route to Dakhla. It was a fairly long stage in terms of mileage, but relatively fast, with, as is often the case, navigation taking pride of place, especially towards the end to find the right headings and get out of this final selective sector of Morocco. Only 168 km remain to reach Dakhla and its bivouac on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, for a well-deserved rest day the following day.

THE AFRICA ECO RACE IS IN DAKHLA
This final stage of the AFRICA ECO RACE on Moroccan soil was completed at lightning speed, with the 404km selective sector completed in 03:31:53 for the bike and 03:31:53 for the car. An identical time to the nearest second! Something rarely seen in the history of Cross-Country Rallies. This is certainly due to the fact that since this year, the cars, SSVs and trucks have all been neutralised for 20 minutes, just like the bikes. It’s quite a coincidence, but one that deserves to be highlighted.
In motorcycling, we take the same three and start again. This time, the battle between Jacopo CERUTTI’s APRILIA and the two YAMAHAs of Pol TARRES and Alessandro BOTTURI went in favour of the latter. The Italian won with a lead of 00:01:57 over his team-mate and 00:03:57 over CERUTTI. In other words, the three riders crossed the finish line together for the third time in a row. It is therefore impossible to really separate them in Morocco because CERRUTI, leader since day one, has 00:03:15 over BOTTURI and a further 30 seconds over TARRES. This situation could quickly change in Mauritania, as the terrain will be so selective.
Behind, on his KTM, Swiss rider Alexandre VAUDAN has put things right, after his navigation error yesterday. He finished 4th, just 00:10:50 behind the winner, ahead of the APRILIA of Italian Francesco MONTANARI by 00:14:46 and Frenchman Atilio FERT on a KTM by 00:15:46.
In the MOTUL XTREME RIDER class, victory of the day went to the likeable French rider Nicolas BOTTU on KTM, while Italian Stefano CHIUSSI extended his lead over Frenchman Antoine DETOURBET, both on HUSQVARNA.
On four wheels, Belgian rider Koen WAUTERS had promised this morning to give his all to win, as this 5th stage of the AFRICA ECO RACE was the end of the road for him. This competitor is also a successful singer in Belgium and the Netherlands, and he begins a series of concerts on January 11th. He therefore had to return to Belgium for two days of rehearsals. Koen WAUTERS kept his word: at the wheel of his TOYOTA Pick-Up, perfectly navigated by Kris VEN DER STEEN, he won with a lead of 00:02:46 over the Hungarians Imre VARGA and Jozsef TOMA, also on a TOYOTA. In 3rd place, we find the first SSV with the CAN AM of Carlos VENTO and Carlos RUIZ MORENO, still more than 8 minutes and 13 seconds ahead of Pierre-Louis LOUBET and François BORSOTTO. A logical gap on this type of terrain, which favours speed, since SSVs are limited to a maximum of 130 km/h, while cars can reach 170 km/h. 3rd place overall went to the TOYOTA of Belgian drivers Pascal FEYRIN and Kurt KEYSERS, while the 3rd place SSV was the CAN AM of Portuguese drivers Ricardo SOUSA and Jorge BRANDAO. The 3rd car of the day was the TOYOTA of Dutchmen Teun STAM and Rene BRARGEMAN, who were also 1st in T1 Diesel. In the provisional overall standings, Frenchmen Gautier PAULIN and Remi BOULANGER are leading the race in their APACHE with a lead of 02:09:39 over the POLARIS of their compatriots Frédéric HENRICY and Eric BERSEY, while Carlos VENTO and Carlos RUIZ MORENO are at 02:36:01.
In the truck category, another victory today for the TATRA of Czech Tomas TOMECEK by just under 4 minutes over the SCANIA of Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN and Marco SIEMONS. The GINAF of the Belgians Cedric FEYRIN, Bjorn BURGELMAN and Tom DE LEEUW finished 3rd in the desert behemoths, a position they also occupied in the provisional overall truck standings behind leader TOMECEK and runner-up VAN VELSEN. In the Classic race, after the day’s 4 Regularity Zones of 30 km, 31 km, 40 km and 51 km respectively, leaving Morocco with 15 ZRs completed, Belgians Eric and Tom CLAEYS are in the lead in their TOYOTA Land Cruiser BJ73. They are ahead of their compatriots Rene DECLERCQ and John DEMEESTER in a BOMBARDIER Iltis, while the MITSUBISHI PAJERO of Austrian Peter BRABECK-LETMATHE and Frenchman Jean-Michel GAYTE is in 3rd place. But the rankings are very tight, with crews fighting it out with a score of zero points and no less than 12 ZRs left on the very complicated Mauritanian terrain to make the difference. So nothing is decided yet!
Tomorrow, Sunday 7 January, the participants in this 15th edition of the AFRICA ECO RACE will be able to recharge their batteries and overhaul their vehicles at the Dakhla bivouac set up on the edge of the lagoon. A much-needed break before the second week of the race in Mauritania.
