AFRICA ECO RACE: ALLES AUF DEN SÜDEN MAROKKOS
Bei einigen Teilnehmern des AFRICA ECO RACE 2024 hat die dritte Etappe vielleicht ihre Spuren hinterlassen, bei anderen war die Motivation heute Morgen beim Start des Biwaks in Oued Draa, unweit von Tagounite, deutlich zu erkennen. Man muss sagen, dass diese Sonderprüfung mit 467 Kilometern besonders lang war und über abwechslungsreiches Gelände führte und am Ende der Strecke eine recht anspruchsvolle Navigation erforderte.
Auch heute war der Italiener Jacopo CERUTTI der Stärkste. Der APRILIA-Fahrer startete heute Morgen auf dem 3. Platz hinter den beiden offiziellen Yamahas und schaffte es, den Italiener Alessandro BOTTURI, der in Führung gegangen war, und den Andorraner Pol TARRES, der als Zweiter gestartet war, einzuholen. Dies war sein dritter Sieg seit Beginn der Rallye und er baute seinen Gesamtvorsprung vor TARRES mit 00:08:55 und BOTTURI mit 00:10:22 aus.
Die drei Männer haben einen Vorsprung von etwas mehr als zwei Stunden vor dem Franko-Marokkaner Guillaume BORNE, der heute an Bord seiner HUSQVARNA erneut Vierter und Spitzenreiter der 450er-Kategorie sowie der ROOKIE RIDERS BY ACERBIS ist. Der Italiener Giovanni GRITTI schnitt auf der vierten Etappe gut ab und platzierte seinen HONDA auf dem 5. Platz und nur 4 Minuten hinter BORNE in der 450er-Klasse.
Es war eindeutig ein guter Tag für die Zweizylinder-Maschinen: Alessandro RUOSO und Nicolas CHARLIER belegten auf ihrer YAMAHA Tenere 700 die Plätze 6 und 7, während Francesco MONTANARI auf der APRILIA den 8. Platz belegte, knapp vor Juan PEDRERO und seiner HARLEY DAVIDSON 1250 Pan Amerikaner, der am Ende sagte:
„Ich bin vorsichtig gestartet, weil ich in den Felsen kein Risiko eingehen wollte. Trotzdem merkte ich an der Tankstelle, dass mein Vorderreifen an der Seitenwand gerissen war und ich fuhr mit der Angst, dass ich den zweiten Teil der Etappe nicht komplett beenden würde. Daher widmete ich mich der Navigation und nahm andere Fahrer mit auf den richtigen Weg. Andererseits bin ich von diesem Motorrad mit seinem unglaublich starken Motor körperlich völlig zerstört.“
Der Italiener Marco MENICHINI rundete mit seiner HUSQVARNA 450 die Top 10 des Tages ab.
Bei der MOTUL XTREME RIDER Challenge für Fahrer ohne Unterstützung ging der Sieg an den Franzosen Nicolas BOTTU auf einer KTM. Auf der anderen Seite liegt der Italiener Stefano CHIUSSI auf seiner HUSQVARNA nach vier Etappen an der Spitze.
Auf vier Rädern zeigten Pierre-Louis LOUBET und François BORSOTTO mit ihrem APACHE SSV trotz zweier Reifenschäden die beste Leistung des Tages. Nach einem tollen Kampf auf der Strecke mit dem Pick-Up TOYOTA von Koen WAUTERS errangen die Franzosen ihren zweiten Sieg und schlugen den CAN AM der Spanier Carlos VENTO und Carlos RUIZ MORENO um 00:03:59.
Der TOYOTA von Koen WAUTERS und Kris VEN DER STEEN belegte mit 00:10:08 den 3. Gesamtrang. Die Belgier gewannen die Kategorie „Autos“ vor den Ungarn Imre VARGA und Jozsef TOMA, die ebenfalls in einem Toyota den sechsten Platz auf der Etappe belegten. Pascal FERYN und Kurt KEYSERS komplettierten das Tagespodium in der Kategorie T1 4X4.
In der vorläufigen Gesamtwertung, die den 4. Gesamtrang und den 3. Platz in der SSV-Kategorie belegt, hat Gautier PAULIN mit Remy BOULANGER und seinem APACHE SSV nun einen Vorsprung von 01:48:09 vor dem CAN AM von Frederic HENRICY und Eric BERSEY und dem Spanier Carlos VENTO und Carlos RUIZ MORENO rücken auf den 3. Platz vor.
In der Lkw-Kategorie ging der Sieg an den SCANIA von Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN und Marco SIEMONS. Das niederländische Team schlug den TATRA des Tschechen Tomas TOMECEK, immer noch Gesamtführender, um rund zehn Minuten.
Im Classic-Rennen tobte heute erneut der Kampf um die beiden Gleichmäßigkeitszonen. Das Niveau war sehr hoch und die Konkurrenten waren unglaublich konstant. Nach drei Etappen und 11 „R-Zs“ liegen die Belgier Eric und Tom CLAEYS in ihrem TOYOTA BJ 73 vor ihren Landsleuten René DECLERCQ und John DEMEESTER in einem BOMBARDIER Iltis. Der Österreicher Peter BRABECK-LETMATHE und der Franzose Jean Michel GAYTE komplettierten das vorläufige Podium im MITSUBISHI Pajero.
Morgen setzt das AFRICA ECO RACE seinen Abstieg Richtung Süden in Richtung Dakhla fort, wo am Sonntag, dem 7. Januar, der Ruhetag stattfindet. In der Zwischenzeit gibt es nach einer 27 km langen Verbindungsprüfung eine 397 km lange Sonderprüfung und eine 168 km lange Verbindungsprüfung, um am Ufer des Atlantischen Ozeans endlich eine Verschnaufpause einzulegen, bevor die zweite Woche in Mauretanien in Angriff genommen wird.

ETAPPE 4: OUED DRAA / FORT CHACAL: 472,41 km
Sonderprüfung: 467,36 km
Die längste Sonderprüfung dieser 15. Auflage des AFRICA ECO RACE. Bis Msied stehen der Oued Draa und seine Schotterpisten auf dem Programm. Von dort aus wird den Wettbewerbern ein neuer Abschnitt angeboten. Eine noch nie dagewesene Route inmitten eines herrlichen Panoramas, ideal für das Produktionsteam und die Fotografen, um unglaubliche Bilder einzufangen. Dieser herrliche Abschnitt führt die Fahrzeuge in Landschaften, die eher für den tiefen Süden Marokkos typisch sind, mit hügeligen Strecken und viel Navigation im Herzen der Wüstenebenen. Bis nach Fort Chacal am Stadtrand von Laâyoune.

AFRICA ECO RACE: ALL OUT FOR SOUTHERN MOROCCO
For some competitors in the AFRICA ECO RACE 2024, Stage 3 may have left its mark, but for others, the motivation was very much in evidence this morning at the start of the bivouac at Oued Draa, not far from Tagounite. It has to be said that this 467km special was particularly long, over varied terrain with some rather demanding navigation at the end of the route.
Once again today, Italy’s Jacopo CERUTTI was the strongest. Starting in 3rd position this morning behind the two official Yamaha’s, the APRILIA rider managed to catch the Italian Alessandro BOTTURI, who had started in the lead, and the Andorran Pol TARRES, who had started 2nd. This was his 3rd victory since the start of the rally and strengthened his overall lead over TARRES at 00:08:55, with BOTTURI at 00:10:22.
The three men have a lead of just over two hours over Franco-Moroccan Guillaume BORNE, once again 4th today aboard his HUSQVARNA and leader of the 450 category and the ROOKIE RIDERS BY ACERBIS. Italian rider Giovanni GRITTI did well on stage 4, putting his HONDA in 5th position and just 4 minutes behind BORNE in the 450 class.
Clearly, it was a good day for the two-cylinder machines, with Alessandro RUOSO and Nicolas CHARLIER finishing 6th and 7th on their YAMAHA Tenere 700, while Francesco MONTANARI finished 8th on the APRILIA, just ahead of Juan PEDRERO and his HARLEY DAVIDSON 1250 Pan American, who said at the finish:
„I started cautiously because I didn’t want to take any risks in the rocks. Despite that, I realized at the refueling point that my front tyre was torn on the sidewall and I drove with the fear that I wouldn’t finish the whole of the second part of the stage. As a result, I applied myself to navigation and I took other riders with me on the right track. On the other hand, I’m totally destroyed physically by this bike with its incredibly powerful engine.”
Italian Marco MENICHINI rounded off the day’s top 10 with his HUSQVARNA 450.
In the MOTUL XTREME RIDER challenge for unassisted riders, victory went to Frenchman Nicolas BOTTU on a KTM. On the other hand, Italian Stefano CHIUSSI on his HUSQVARNA is the leader after four stages.
On four wheels, Pierre-Louis LOUBET and François BORSOTTO put in the best performance of the day with their APACHE SSV, despite two punctures. After a great battle on the track with the Pick-Up TOYOTA of Koen WAUTERS, the Frenchmen scored their second victory and beat the CAN AM of Spaniards Carlos VENTO and Carlos RUIZ MORENO by 00:03:59.
The TOYOTA of Koen WAUTERS and Kris VEN DER STEEN finished 3rd overall at 00:10:08. The Belgians won the Car category ahead of Hungary’s Imre VARGA and Jozsef TOMA, who finished 6th on the stage, also in a TOYOTA. Pascal FERYN and Kurt KEYSERS completed the day’s podium in the T1 4X4 category.
In the provisional overall standings, taking 4th place overall and 3rd in the SSV category, Gautier PAULIN driven by Remy BOULANGER and their APACHE SSV now have a lead of 01:48:09 over Frederic HENRICY and Eric BERSEY’s CAN AM, while Spain’s Carlos VENTO and Carlos RUIZ MORENO move up to 3rd place.
In the truck category, victory went to the SCANIA of Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN and Marco SIEMONS. The Dutch team beat the TATRA of Czech Tomas TOMECEK, still the overall leader, by around ten minutes.
In the Classic race, the battle raged again today over the two Regularity Zones. The level was very high and the competitors were incredibly consistent. After three stages and 11 “R-Z’s”, Belgians Eric and Tom CLAEYS are leading the way in their TOYOTA BJ 73 ahead of their compatriots René DECLERCQ and John DEMEESTER in a BOMBARDIER Iltis. Austrian Peter BRABECK-LETMATHE and Frenchman Jean Michel GAYTE rounded off the provisional podium in a MITSUBISHI Pajero.
Tomorrow, the AFRICA ECO RACE will continue its descent due south towards Dakhla, where the rest day will take place on Sunday 7 January. In the meantime, after a 27km liaison, there will be a 397km special stage and a 168km liaison to finally take a breather on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean before tackling the second week in Mauritania.

The longest special stage of this 15th edition of the AFRICA ECO RACE. The Oued Draa and its gravel tracks are on the programme as far as Msied. From there, a new section will be offered to competitors. A never-before-seen route in the heart of a splendid panorama, ideal for the production team and photographers to capture incredible images. This magnificent section will take the vehicles to landscapes more typical of the Moroccan deep south, with rolling tracks and plenty of navigation in the heart of desert plains. All the way to Fort Chacal on the outskirts of Laayoune.
