EIN BESONDERER TAG BEIM AFRICA ECO RACE
Ab Sonnenaufgang, bei Minustemperaturen im Boudnib-Biwak, begann der Tag
Schwieriger Start für die Teilnehmer des AFRICA ECO RACE 2024. Die 383 km lange Sonderprüfung zwischen Boudnib und Mhamid sollte es nicht einfacher machen.
Während die Teilnehmer des Rennens, des Classic und des Raids auf der Strecke ihr Bestes gaben und das Organisationsteam für die Leitung des Rennens zuständig war, verbreitete sich während des gesamten Rennens die schreckliche Nachricht vom Tod von René METGE. Es genügt zu sagen, dass am Ende des Tages die Stimmung im Mhamid-Biwak angespannt war und die Leistungen auf dieser 2. Etappe fast den zweiten Platz belegten.
Was auch immer passiert, das Rennen wird morgen fortgesetzt, das sich René, als eine der Säulen des AFRICA ECO RACE, sicherlich gewünscht hätte.
In der Motorradkategorie absolvierten die drei besten Fahrer der Gesamtwertung den 383 km langen selektiven Abschnitt in etwas mehr als 4 Stunden, mit einer Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit von 92 km/h und fast einer Stunde vor dem Zeitplan.
Jacopo CERUTTI startete heute Morgen als Erster und führte den ganzen Tag in seiner APRILIA an. Ohne jemals eingeholt zu werden, vergrößerte der Italiener sogar seinen Vorsprung auf die beiden Yamahas von Pol TARRES und Alessandro BOTTURI und hat nun einen Gesamtvorsprung von 00:08:53 vor dem Spanier und 00:10:17 vor seinem Landsmann. Daher war er im Ziel recht zufrieden: „Ich bin heute wirklich mein Maximum gefahren. Ich fühle mich gut auf dem Motorrad und habe ein gutes Gefühl mit dem Roadbook, das wirklich gut gemacht ist. Es ist ein langer Weg bis Dakar, aber im Moment habe ich viel Spaß, besonders auf der heutigen kurzen Etappe, die ich lieber länger gehabt hätte, weil es mir so viel Spaß gemacht hat.“
Hinter ihm bestätigte der Franko-Marokkaner Guillaume BORNE seine Position auf dem 4. Platz vor der KTM des Schweizer Fahrers Alexandre VAUDAN, beide auf 450ern.
Auf vier Rädern dominieren derzeit die SSVs, insbesondere die beiden APACHE T3 Hybrids, die heute die ersten beiden Plätze belegten. Der Sieg ging an Pierre-Louis LOUBET und François BORSOTTO vor Gautier PAULIN und Remi BOULANGER mit 00:05:24, während der CAN AM von Heatcliff ZINGRAFF und Gregory REVEST mit 00:08:26 das Podium der Sonderprüfung komplettierte.
In der Gesamtwertung liegt Gautier PAULIN bei seiner ersten Teilnahme an einer Cross-Country-Rallye vor Heatcliff ZINGRAFF an der Spitze. Der ehemalige Motocross-Champion und Kapitän des französischen Teams, der vor einigen Monaten den Grand Prix des Nations gewann, ist dennoch sehr bescheiden, wenn er über seine Leistung spricht: „Der APACHE-Proto ist unglaublich und es macht großen Spaß, ihn zu fahren.“ Der Zwei- oder Vierradantriebsmodus, der entweder die Speicherung von Leistung oder die Nutzung von Effizienz ermöglicht, ist kompliziert zu handhaben. Es ist ein echter Sport, im Eimer zu sein. Ich habe heute meine ersten Runden in den Dünen von Merzouga gedreht. Ich war eindeutig nicht sehr gut, aber das ist normal, ich muss lernen. Im Staub war es auch kompliziert, weil ich mich zurückhalten musste. Dennoch bin ich mit den ersten beiden Tagen zufrieden.“
Mit ihrem heutigen neunten Platz in ihrem Toyota übernehmen die Belgier Pascal FERYN und Kurt KEYSERS die Führung in der Kategorie „Autos“ und den 6. Platz in der Gesamtwertung, etwas mehr als 15 Minuten vor ihren Teamkollegen und Landsleuten Koen WAUTERS und Kris VEN DER STEEN.
In der Lkw-Kategorie behält der Tscheche Tomas TOMECEK, allein am Steuer seines TATRA, obwohl er heute Zweiter wurde, die Führung in der vorläufigen Wertung vor dem SCANIA der Niederländer Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN und Marco SIEMONS.
In der Classic-Kategorie, einem Gleichmäßigkeitsrennen, das Geländefahrzeugen vorbehalten ist, die vor 2000 gebaut wurden, wurden nach der gestrigen Verbindungsetappe die ersten fünf Sektoren auf dieser 2. Etappe nach Mhamid absolviert.
Eric und Tom CLAEYS waren auf ihrem 73er TOYOTA Land Cruiser am beständigsten. Die Belgier lagen vor ihren Landsleuten René DECLERCQ und John DEMEESTER auf ihrem BOMBARDIER Iltis, beides große Spezialisten in dieser Disziplin. Der Niederländer Peter BRABECK und der Franzose Jean-Michel GAYTE komplettieren das vorläufige Podium im MITSUBISHI Pajero.
Morgen wird die AFRICA ECO RACE-Karawane Richtung Süden nach Oued Draa aufbrechen und 522 km zurücklegen, darunter 463 km Sonderprüfungen. Es wird ein intensiver Tag, an dem der Erg Chegaga manchmal schwierig zu überqueren ist. Manfred KROISS, der sportliche Leiter der Veranstaltung, beschloss, diese Etappe seinem Mentor und Freund René METGE zu widmen.
2. Etappe: BOUDNIB / MHAMID: 424.90 kms
Sonderprüfung: 382,72 km
Verbindung: 30,96 km
Die zweite Wertungsprüfung startet 11 km vom Biwak entfernt. Eine der Besonderheiten des AFRICA ECO RACE besteht darin, die Verbindungsabschnitte vor und nach den selektiven Sektoren so weit wie möglich zu vermeiden. Der erste Abschnitt bis nach Merzouga wird völlig neu sein, da in diesem Abschnitt noch keine Rallye ihre Räder abgestellt hat. Auch die Passage von Erg Chebbi nach Merzouga wird auf ungewöhnliche Weise befahren, um dem ersten Dünenabschnitt ein etwas anderes Gefühl zu verleihen. Der Rest der Route nach Tagounite wird aus mehreren Abschnitten früherer Ausgaben bestehen, jedoch wiederum in einer neuen Reihenfolge, um diesen Abschnitt der marokkanischen Wüste auf eine andere Art und Weise zu durchqueren. Die Ziellinie wird ebenfalls an einem coolen neuen Ort in der Nähe von Tagounite eingerichtet.

A SPECIAL DAY AT THE AFRICA ECO RACE
From sunrise, with sub-zero temperatures at the Boudnib bivouac, the day got off to a
difficult start for the participants in the AFRICA ECO RACE 2024. The 383km special stage between Boudnib and Mhamid was not going to make it any easier.
While the competitors in the race, the Classic and the participants in the Raid were giving their all on the track, and the organising team was in place to manage the race, the terrible news of René METGE’s death began to spread throughout the race. Suffice to say that the atmosphere was heavy on the Mhamid bivouac at the end of the day and that the performances on this 2nd stage almost took second place.
Whatever happens, the race will continue tomorrow as René, one of the pillars of the
AFRICA ECO RACE, would have wanted.
In the Motorcycle category, the top three riders in the standings completed the 383km selective sector in just over 4 hours, averaging 92km/h and nearly an hour ahead of schedule.
Jacopo CERUTTI started first this morning and led the way all day in his APRILIA. Without ever being caught up, the Italian even widened the gap over the two YAMAHAs of Pol TARRES and Alessandro BOTTURI and now has an overall lead of 00:08:53 over the Spaniard and 00:10:17 over his compatriot. He was therefore rather satisfied at the finish: “I really rode to my maximum today. I feel good on the bike and I have a good feeling with the road book, which is really well done. It’s a long way to Dakar but for the moment I’m having a lot of fun, especially in today’s short stage which I would have preferred to have been longer because I was enjoying myself so much.”
Behind him, Franco-Moroccan Guillaume BORNE confirmed his position, putting his
HUSQVARNA in 4th place ahead of the KTM of Swiss rider Alexandre VAUDAN, both on 450s.
On four wheels, for the moment, the SSVs are ruling the roost, in particular the two APACHE T3 Hybrids which took the first two places today. Victory went to Pierre-Louis LOUBET and François BORSOTTO, ahead of Gautier PAULIN and Remi BOULANGER by 00:05:24, while the CAN AM of Heatcliff ZINGRAFF and Gregory REVEST completed the special stage podium at 00:08:26.
In the overall standings, in his first participation in a Cross-Country Rally, Gautier PAULIN is in the lead ahead of Heatcliff ZINGRAFF. The former Motocross Champion and captain of the French team, winner of the Grand Prix des Nations a few months ago, is nonetheless very humble when he talks about his performance: “The APACHE proto is incredible and great fun to drive. The two- or four-wheel drive mode, which allows either power to be stored or efficiency to be used, is complicated to manage. It’s a real sport to be in the bucket. I did my first laps today in the Merzouga dunes. I clearly wasn’t very good but that’s normal, I need to learn. It was also complicated in the dust because I had to hold off. But I’m satisfied with the first two days all the same”.
By finishing 9th today with their TOYOTA, Belgians Pascal FERYN and Kurt KEYSERS take the lead in the Car category and 6th place overall, just over 15 minutes ahead of their teammates and compatriots Koen WAUTERS and Kris VEN DER STEEN.
In the truck category, the Czech Tomas TOMECEK, alone at the wheel of his TATRA, although 2nd today, retains the lead in the provisional standings ahead of the SCANIA of Dutchmen Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN and Marco SIEMONS.
In the Classic category, a regularity race reserved for off-road vehicles built before 2000, after yesterday’s liaison stage, the first five sectors were completed on this 2nd stage to Mhamid.
Eric and Tom CLAEYS were the most consistent on their 73 TOYOTA Land Cruiser. The Belgians were ahead of their compatriots René DECLERCQ and John DEMEESTER on their BOMBARDIER Iltis, both great specialists in the discipline. Dutchman Peter BRABECK and Frenchman Jean-Michel GAYTE complete the provisional podium in a MITSUBISHI Pajero.
Tomorrow, the AFRICA ECO RACE caravan will head south to Oued Draa with 522km to cover, including 463km of special stages. It will be an intense day, with the Erg Chegaga sometimes difficult to cross. Manfred KROISS, the event’s Sporting Director, decided to dedicate this stage to René METGE, his mentor and friend.
STAGE 2: BOUDNIB / MHAMID: 424.90 kms
Special stage: 382.72 km
Liaison: 30.96 kms
The second special stage starts 11 km from the bivouac. One of the particularities of the AFRICA ECO RACE is to avoid as much as possible the liaison sections before and after the selective sectors. The first section up to Merzouga will be entirely new, as no rally has ever put its wheels down in this sector. The passage from Erg Chebbi to Merzouga will also be taken in an unusual way, to give the first stretch of dunes a slightly different feel. The remainder of the route to Tagounite will be made up of several sections from previous editions, but again in a new order, in order to cross this stretch of Moroccan desert in a different way. The finish line will also be set up in a cool new location near Tagounite.
