AFRICA ECO RACE: DER SANDWIND mischt sich mit dem Rennen
Bisher blieb das AFRICA ECO RACE von Wetterproblemen verschont.
Leider fegte am Freitagmorgen der 10. Etappe ein heftiger Wind über das Amodjar-Plateau und verursachte einen Sandsturm, der den Start der Hubschrauber der Organisation verhinderte. Ohne einen Helikopter war es nicht möglich, optimale Sicherheit zu gewährleisten und das Rennen zu überwachen. Deshalb wurde beschlossen, die Motorräder, Autos und LKWs im Konvoi zur Tankstelle zu schicken, von der aus der Start erfolgte. Infolgedessen wurde die 387 km lange Sonderprüfung um 190 km verkürzt, wodurch der für den Etappenstart vorgesehene Dünenabschnitt wegfiel.
In der Motorradkategorie kann man nach der gestrigen 6-Minuten-Strafe für Alessandro BOTTURI mit Recht sagen, dass die Blues heute Morgen in schlechter Stimmung waren. Tatsächlich wäre es schwierig gewesen, diese 6 Minuten von Jacopo CERRUTI, dem APRILIA-Fahrer, zurückzugewinnen, der seit Beginn der Rallye souverän war. Trotzdem gab Alessandro BOTTURI auf seiner Yamaha 700 Tenere alles und gewann die Wertungsprüfung mit einer Zeit von 00:02:26 vor Jacopo CERUTTIs APRILA 660 Tuareg, dem zweiten Platz des Tages. Insgesamt liegt BOTTURI nun nur noch 00:04:38 hinter CERRUTI.
Das ist zwar nicht viel, aber auch viel, denn morgen stehen BOTTURI nur noch 247 km Wertungsprüfung zur Verfügung, um die Wende herbeizuführen. Aber da er die Strecke freimachen wird, ist das fast unmöglich. Zumal CERRUTI auf seinen APRILIA-Teamkollegen Francesco MONTANARI zählen kann, der heute ein fantastisches Comeback feierte und Dritter wurde. Er könnte morgen durchaus mit von der Partie sein.

Das Ende der Rallye verlief für die Nachwuchstalente der Disziplin recht erfolgreich: Der Franzose Attilio FERT belegte auf seiner KTM den 4. Platz, vor der HONDA des Italieners Marco Aurelio FONTANA und der KTM des Schweizers Alexandre VAUDAN, der immer noch Spitzenreiter bei den Rookies ist Rider By Acerbis Challenge. Jetzt, da Giovanni GRITTI heute Probleme mit der Kraftstoffversorgung hat, ist er auch der Spitzenreiter der 450er insgesamt. Beim Motul Xtreme Rider kam erneut Patrice CARRILLON ins Ziel
auf dieser 11. Etappe die Nase vorn. Der Franzose liegt nun auf dem 13. Gesamtrang und mehr als 2 Stunden vor Antoine DETOURBET, seinem Landsmann und Zweitplatzierten in der Kategorie Motorrad-Koffer.
Auf vier Rädern stellten Gautier PAULIN und Remi BOULANGER ihr APACHE erneut auf die Probe. Die Franzosen lagen 26 Sekunden vor dem CAN AM der Portugiesen Ricardo SOUSA und Jorge BRANDAO. Kurz vor dem Ziel hat diese Legende des Welt-Motocross, der an seiner ersten Cross-Country-Rallye teilnimmt, nun einen Vorsprung von fast vier Stunden vor dem TOYOTA Hilux des Belgiers Pascal FERYN, der auf der Etappe Dritter ist. Dennoch blieb er bei den Zielinterviews vorsichtig: „Ich wollte unbedingt einen weiteren Etappensieg bei diesem AFRICA ECO RACE einfahren. Gleichzeitig ist es die beste Möglichkeit, unseren ersten Platz zu festigen. Aber Vorsicht, solange die Zielflagge nicht fällt, kann alles passieren! Lasst uns nicht mitreißen und bis morgen warten.“
In der LKW-Kategorie machten Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN und Marco SIEMONS ihre Eskapaden gestern wieder gut und verbrachten einen Großteil der Nacht damit, den SCANIA zu reparieren, der durch das Liegen in den Dünen beschädigt worden war. Die Niederländer belegten den 9. Gesamtrang vor dem TATRA von Tomas TOMECEK und dem GINAF der Belgier Cedric FERYN, Björn BURGELMAN und Tom DE LEEUW. Insgesamt dürfte der Sieg, sofern es nicht zu einer Katastrophe kommt, TOMECEK nicht entgehen, der einen Vorsprung von über 2 Stunden hat.
Im Classic-Rennen siegten Andres BRABECK-LEMATHE und Laurent MAGAT in der einzigen Gleichmäßigkeitszone dieser 10. Etappe und lagen über die 59 km nur 10 Sekunden hinter der Idealzeit. Insgesamt liegen die belgischen Fahrer Eric und Tom CLAEYS in ihrem TOYOTA BJ73 immer noch an der Spitze, aber morgen gibt es zwei ZRs über 59 km und 150 km. Dieser letzte ZR mit seiner ungewöhnlichen Distanz in der Disziplin könnte durchaus der Richter dieser ersten Ausgabe des AFRICA ECO RACE sein.
Wie immer beim AFRICA ECO RACE wird der letzte Tag am Samstag die letzte Etappe sein, die einen gezeiteten Sektor beinhaltet. Dies wird für einige Teilnehmer die einzige Gelegenheit sein, vor dem Ziel, das unweit von Nouakchott nach 247 km Sonderprüfungen beurteilt wird, eine gute Leistung zu zeigen. Den Finishern bleibt nur noch eine 255 km lange Verbindung zum Biwak in der Nähe von Saint Louis im Senegal, wo sie mit Freunden, Familie und Partnern wiedervereint werden, die extra für diesen Anlass angereist sind.

Vom Biwak aus startet die vorletzte Wertungsprüfung des AFRICA ECO RACE. Es ist ein guter Moment für die Assistenten, die den Start sehen können, da die Straßenverbindung nach Akjoujt relativ kurz sein wird. Bald sind die Teilnehmer wieder in den Dünen unterwegs, wobei die ersten etwa vierzig Kilometer nicht viel Spaß machen, da sie voller Kamelgras sind. Der Klimawandel und der Regen, der mittlerweile regelmäßig in der Wüste fällt, ermöglichen die Entwicklung von Vegetation und verändern das Gelände. Die Tankstelle wird an der Straße nach Choum errichtet, die die Rallye kreuzen wird. Von diesem Zeitpunkt an werden die meisten Schwierigkeiten hinter uns liegen. Es ist an der Zeit, dem Fahren auf den allseits beliebten Sandpisten bis nach Akjoujt, dem historischen Dorf der Rallye, Platz zu machen, das jedes Jahr von der Durchfahrt der Lastwagen der Organisation profitiert, die Schulausrüstung und Spielzeug an mauretanische Schulkinder liefern.

AFRICA ECO RACE: THE SAND WIND MIXES WITH THE RACE
Up until now, the AFRICA ECO RACE has been spared from weather problems.
Unfortunately, on Friday morning, for the 10th stage, a violent wind swept across the Amodjar plateau causing a sandstorm that prevented the organisation’s helicopters from taking off. Without a helicopter, it was impossible to ensure optimum safety and to monitor the race, so the decision was taken to send the bikes, cars and trucks in convoy to the petrol station from where the start was given. As a result, the 387km special stage was shortened by 190km, cutting out the section of dunes planned for the start of the stage.
In the motorbike category, after yesterday’s 6-minute penalty for Alessandro BOTTURI, it’s fair to say that the blues were in low spirits this morning. Indeed, it would have been difficult to take back those 6 minutes from Jacopo CERRUTI, the APRILIA driver, who has been imperious since the start of the Rally. Despite this, Alessandro BOTTURI gave his all on his Yamaha 700 Tenere to win the special stage with a time of 00:02:26 over Jacopo CERUTTI’s APRILA 660 Tuareg, 2nd on the day. Overall, BOTTURI is now just 00:04:38 behind CERRUTI.
That’s not much, but it’s also a lot, because tomorrow there will be just 247 km of special stage left for BOTTURI to try and turn things around. But, as he’ll be opening up the track, it’s almost mission impossible. Especially as CERRUTI will be able to count on his APRILIA teammate Francesco MONTANARI, who made a fantastic comeback today to finish third. He could well be in the mix tomorrow.

The end of the rally was rather successful for the young guns of the discipline, with Frenchman Attilio FERT taking 4th place on his KTM, ahead of the HONDA of Italian Marco Aurelio FONTANA and the KTM of Swiss rider Alexandre VAUDAN, still leader of the Rookie Rider By Acerbis Challenge. Now, with Giovanni GRITTI’s fuel supply problems today, he is also leader of the 450s overall. In the Motul Xtreme Rider, Patrice CARRILLON again finished
ahead on this 11th stage. The Frenchman is now 13th overall and more than 2 hours ahead of Antoine DETOURBET, his compatriot and runner-up in the motorbike trunks category.
On four wheels, Gautier PAULIN and Remi BOULANGER once again put their APACHE to the test. The Frenchmen were 26 seconds ahead of the CAN AM of Portugal’s Ricardo SOUSA and Jorge BRANDAO. On the eve of the finish, this legend of world Motocross, who is taking part in his first Cross-Country Rally, now has a lead of almost 4 hours over the TOYOTA Hilux of Belgian Pascal FERYN, 3rd on the stage. Nevertheless, he remained cautious during the interviews at the finish: “I was really keen to score another stage win on this AFRICA ECO RACE. At the same time, it’s the best way of consolidating our first place. But be careful, as long as the chequered flag hasn’t fallen, anything can happen! Let’s not get carried away and wait until tomorrow”.
In the truck category, Aad VAN VELSEN, Michel VAN VELSEN and Marco SIEMONS made amends for their antics yesterday and spent a good part of the night repairing the SCANIA which had been damaged after lying down in the dunes. The Dutchmen finished 9th overall, ahead of the TATRA of Tomas TOMECEK and the GINAF of Belgians Cedric FERYN, Bjorn BURGELMAN and Tom DE LEEUW. Overall, barring a catastrophe, victory should not elude TOMECEK, who has a lead of over 2 hours.
In the Classic race, Andres BRABECK-LEMATHE and Laurent MAGAT came out on top in the only Regularity Zone of this 10th stage, being just 10 seconds off the ideal time over the 59 km. Overall, Belgian drivers Eric and Tom CLAEYS are still in the lead in their TOYOTA BJ73, but tomorrow there will be two ZRs of 59 km and 150 km. This last ZR, with its unusual distance in the discipline, could well be the judge of this first edition of the AFRICA ECO RACE.
As always on the AFRICA ECO RACE, Saturday’s final day will be the last stage to include a timed sector. This will be the only opportunity for some competitors to put in a good performance before the finish, which will be judged not far from Nouakchott after 247km of special stages. All that remains for the finishers is a 255km liaison to the bivouac near Saint Louis in Senegal, where they will be reunited with friends, family and partners who have come specially for the occasion.

The penultimate special stage of the AFRICA ECO RACE starts from the bivouac. It’s a good moment for the assistants, who will be able to see the start, as the road link to Akjoujt will be relatively short. Competitors are soon back on the dunes, with the first forty kilometers or so not being much fun, as it’s full of camel grass. Climate change and the rain that now falls regularly in the desert allow vegetation to develop, modifying the terrain. The petrol station will be set up on the road to Choum, which the rally will cross. From that point on, most of the difficulties will be behind us. It’s time to give way to the driving on the ever-popular sandy tracks as far as Akjoujt, the Rally’s historic village, which benefits every year from the passage of the organization’s trucks, which deliver school equipment and toys to Mauritanian schoolchildren.
