Our winch anchor was a dead tree, and it collapsed onto the 60 Series. Jock McDonald and Brocko drag a Cape York LandCruiser to Zeehan via the Mile of Mud in Tasmania’s Tarkine. 4WD recovery.
The mission: get this unlocked, gutless 60 from the tip of Cape York all the way down to Tassie’s west coast, with Brocko behind the wheel. Jock’s in the HiLux, Odell’s bringing the newly built Outback Armour Triton on a wicked suspension setup, and Laurie’s got the twin-locked Runva GQ.
First up is a track long abandoned, the same one we hit in 15KMs of CHAOS. Brocko’s bogged before we’re a kay in, there’s a smashed window, and Odell needs a front and rear winch to get off a slippery bank. Then a cold night push into the bush, and the big one. A bent steering arm straightened on the spot and a night pulled up mid-track.
Second leg of the adventure is Ring River Track: yellow clay ruts, the infamous Bottom End hole, a creek and a climb up gnarly rock steps, and a final bog right on Zeehan’s doorstep. We won’t spoil whether the 60 gets there in one piece.
Same track, first time round: 15KMs of CHAOS
