Nach einem intensiven Kampf mit Cayden MacCachren während des gesamten Renntages erzielte das Team Grabowski Brothers Racing am Samstagnachmittag den Gesamtsieg des Unlimited Race beim ersten California 300. Als alles gesagt und getan war, fuhren Dustin und Troy Grabowski den #272 Unlimited Truck Spec zu einer Vier-Runden-Endzeit von 5:44:23, etwas mehr als zweieinhalb Minuten schneller als MacCachren.

„Es ist cool, endlich einen ersten Overall-Sieg in einem Spec-Truck zu haben!“ sagte Dustin Grabowski, der die ersten beiden Runden fuhr. „Leider hatten wir bei Meile fünf einen schleichende Plattfuß hinten recht. Wir konnten das jedoch bis Meile 50 rettten, bevor es schließlich explodierte. Dann mussten wir aussteigen und den Reifen wechseln. In der zweiten Runde hatten wir bis etwa 15 Meilen vor dem Ziel eine gute Runde, als wir hinten links einen Platten hatten, also mussten wir anhalten und ändern. Dann hielt ich an und übergab ich das Lenkrad meinem kleinen Bruder – es war sein erstes Mal, dass er mit dem Truck fuhr, er hatte vielleicht 50 bis 75 Meilen Tests, bevor wir hier rauskamen, aber er hatte einen fehlerfreien Lauf.

„Ich wollte mir Zeit nehmen, fahren ohne zu viel Druck zu machen“, gab Troy Grabowski zu. „Am Ende hat es für mich geklappt. Ich habe keine Platten bekommen und es war eine solide Fahrt. Ich hatte nicht viel erwartet – ich kam nur hierher, um zu cruisen. Ich wollte nicht auf einen Overall-Sieg – ich hätte nie gedacht, dass das überhaupt möglich wäre. Aber es war eine tolle Zeit!‘

Die 70-Meilen-Schleife von Barstow war ebenso gnadenlos wie beeindruckend während die Fahrer im gesamten Feld mit einer herausfordernden Strecke kämpften und tagsüber sogar mit Reifenverschleiß konfrontiert waren. Fahrer wie Eric Hardin und Steve Olliges legten früh beeindruckende Rundenzeiten hin und stellten sicher, dass der Kampf mit MacCachren eng bleiben würde. Aber beide musste etwas das Gas rausnehmen, so dass die Tür für die Spec-Trucks offen war, um MacCachren näher zu kommen. Am Ende machte die letzte Runde den Unterschied; Troy Grabowski drehte die beste Runde des Tages mit der Nummer 272, eine 1:22:52, verglichen mit MacCachrens 1:29:17.

Thomas St. Peter würde das Gesamtpodium als zweiter Spec-Truck mit einer Zeit von 6:01:46 komplettieren, während Will Heaton (6:11:34) das Podium der Spec-Klasse als Vierter und Johnny McCall (6:12:46) als Fünfter beendeten.

„Herzlichen Glückwunsch an die Grabowski-Brüder zum Sieg beim ersten California 300 Unlimited Race!“ sagte California 300 CEO Matt Martelli. „Offroad-Rennen waren schon immer ein Familiensport und es war erstaunlich zwei Familien zu sehen, die so viel für den Sport getan haben, und hier an erster und zweiter Stelle ins Ziel gekommen sind. Dustin und Troy sind ein tolles Rennen gefahren und Cayden MacCachren hat uns alle beeindruckt, als er in den Truck seines Vaters gestiegen ist und den ganzen Tag um den Sieg gekämpft hat. Was als Zermürbungskampf begann, wurde zu einem epischen Kampf – und wir können es kaum erwarten, ihn nächstes Jahr wieder zu erleben!“

After an intense battle with Cayden MacCachren throughout race day, the Grabowski Brothers Racing team scored the overall Unlimited Race victory in the inaugural California 300 on Saturday afternoon. When all was said and done, Dustin and Troy Grabowski drove the #272 Unlimited Truck Spec to a four-lap finishing time of 5:44:23, just over two and a half minutes faster than MacCachren, driving his first race in his legendary father Rob’s #1 Unlimited Truck.

“It’s cool to finally have a first overall in the Spec truck!” said Dustin Grabowski, who drove the first two laps. “Maybe by mile five, we had a slow leaker, a right rear tire. We were able to push it to about mile 50 before it finally exploded, so we had to get out and change it, and it was stuck bent around the wheel so we had to get it off. On the second lap, we had a good lap until about 15 miles to the finish, when we had a left rear flat, so we had to pull over and change that. Then I pulled over and handed it off to my little brother—it was his first time racing the truck, he had maybe 50 to 75 miles testing before we came out here, but he had a flawless run.“

“I was going to take my time, drive what I could see, and not push hard,” admitted Troy Grabowski. “It ended up working out for me. I got no flats, and it was just a solid cruise. I wasn’t expecting much—I just came out here to cruise, I wasn’t going to push for an overall, I never thought that was in the picture. But it was a blast!“

The 70-mile Barstow loop was as unforgiving as it was impressive, with drivers throughout the field fighting a challenging course and even facing tire wear during the day. Drivers like Eric Hardin and Steve Olliges laid down impressive early lap times, ensuring that the fight would remain close with MacCachren, but both would retire early from the action, opening the door for Spec trucks to close in on MacCachren—both on the course itself and on corrected time. In the end, the final lap made the difference; Troy Grabowski turned the #272’s best lap of the day, a 1:22:52, compared to MacCachren’s 1:29:17.

Thomas St. Peter would complete the overall podium as the second Spec truck with a time of 6:01:46, while Will Heaton (6:11:34) would complete the Spec class podium in fourth and Johnny McCall (6:12:36) was the top Class 1 finisher at fifth overall.

What started out as a battle of attrition turned into an epic fight—and we already can’t wait to do it again next year!“
