Fast 200 Teilnehmer machten sich am Samstagmorgen für die zweite Ausgabe der jährliche Baja 400 für den Start fertig. Das insgesamt dritte Rennen der SCORE World Desert Championship 2021 und die letzte Runde vor der saisonbestimmenden Baja 1000 im November. NIemandem war klar, dass Bryce Menzies nicht vorhatte seinen Spitzenplatz abzugeben, nachdem er bereits in der Qualifikation die Pole Position holte.
Trotz eines DNF in der Baja 500 hatte Menzies nicht an seinem Flow verloren, wie seine Siegerzeit von 8:26:59 ohne jegliche Strafen über 400 Meilen (640km) Distanz beweist. Genau wie bei der Saisoneröffnung beim San Felipe 250 sicherten sich Menzies und Luke McMillin die ersten beiden Plätze, während Offroad Motorsports Hall of Fame Fahrer Rob MacCachren das Gesamtpodium vervollständigte.

Alan und Aaron Ampudia lagen knapp zwei Minuten hinter einem Podiumsplatz auf Platz vier, während Dan McMillin die Top 5 komplettierte und Cameron Steele sich mit dem ersten Baja 400-Sieger Ryan Arciero Platz sechs teilte. Insgesamt schafften es 23 der 30 Trophy Truck Starter ins Ziel, während der Spitzenreiter Andy McMillin nicht dabei war, da er einen schweren Unfall mit Totalschaden erlitt. McMillin und Beifahrer Johnny Nelson blieben unverletzt.

Cody Parkhouse holte sich in der Klasse 1 mit mehr als 20 Minuten Vorsprung auf Brendan Gaughan die Top-Platzierung, während Jason McNeil der erste Wiederholungssieger des Jahres in der Trophy Truck Spec-Klasse wurde. McNeil holte den den Sieg mit knapp zwei Minuten Vorsprung vor Ryan Hancock und Brock Heger, während Bryce Swaim und der Rallye-Dakar-Champion Toby Price das Podium komplettierten. Die Ergebnisse der Pro Moto Unlimited-Klasse wurden am Sonntag bis zur Überprüfung und Entscheidung durch das SCORE Competition Review Board zurückgehalten.
In den Pro-UTV-Divisionen war Austin Weiland mit einer Siegeszeit von 10:18:58 in der Forced Induction-Klasse der Gruppenbeste. Er hatte Phil Blurton, der sein zweites Klassenpodium in Folge erzielte und Justin Lambert auf die Plätze dahinter verwiesen. Kaden Wells erzielte in der Sauger-Klasse einen Sieg vor Paul Barnhart Jr. und San Felipe-Siegerin Kristen Matlock.

Von hier aus gibt es nur noch eine Chance, 2021 an einem Lauf zur SCORE World Desert Championship teilzunehmen. Die 54. SCORE Baja 1000 wird die gewohnten Superteams in der Trophy Truck-Klasse sowie den Abschluss einer Reihe spannender Meisterschaftskämpfe erwarten. Die technische Abnahme und der Papierkram finden vom 16. bis 17. November statt, die Jagd von Ensenada nach La Paz beginnt am Donnerstag, den 18. November.

Nearly 200 racers saddled up on Saturday morning for the 2nd Annual SCORE Baja 400, the third race of the 2021 SCORE World Desert Championship and final round before the season-defining Baja 1000 in November. Little did they know that when Bryce Menzies qualified on the pole in the middle of the week, he’d have no plans to give up the top spot.
Despite a DNF in the Baja 500, momentum was firmly on Menzies’ side, as he posted a winning time of 8:26:59 with no penalties to take top honors in the 400-mile race. Just like the season-opening San Felipe 250, Menzies and Luke McMillin would lock up the top two spots, while Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer Rob MacCachren would complete the overall podium.

Alan and Aaron Ampudia were just under two minutes out of a podium finish in fourth, while Dan McMillin completed the top five and Cameron Steele teamed up with inaugural Baja 400 winner Ryan Arciero for sixth. All told, an impressive 23 of the 30 Trophy Truck starters made it to the finish, but incoming points leader Andy McMillin wasn’t among them as he suffered a major incident. McMillin and co-driver Johnny Nelson were unhurt.

Cody Parkhouse would claim top honors in Class 1 by more than 20 minutes over Brendan Gaughan, while Jason McNeil would become the year’s first repeat winner in the Trophy Truck Spec class. McNeil would take the win by just under two minutes over Ryan Hancock and Brock Heger, while Bryce Swaim and Dakar Rally champion Toby Price would complete the podium. The Pro Moto Unlimited class results were held back as of Sunday pending review and decision by the SCORE Competition Review Board.

From here, there’s only one more chance to take a SCORE World Desert Championship in 2021, and it’s the biggest opportunity of the year. The 54th Annual SCORE Baja 1000 will see its usual slate of superteams in the Trophy Truck class, as well as the conclusion of a number of thrilling championship battles. Tech and contingency will take place on November 16-17, with the chase from Ensenada to La Paz kicking off on Thursday, November 18.
